On stage, the ceremony rolled on to the parents' speeches.
Dante and Elinor stepped up, taking their places beside Sylvie.-
Seeing the microphone and notes in Dante's hand, Hulda assumed he was about to deliver a toast. However, the MC's next announcement made her heart violently seize.
"And now, let us welcome the groom's mother, Valery, and his son, little Miles!"
Hulda's breath hitched. She stared in utter disbelief at the older woman and the little boy walking hand-in-hand up the steps.
It was none other than her mother-in-law, Valery, and her own six-year-old son, Miles.
"M... Miles... why...?" Hulda murmured, her mind reeling.
Miles spent almost every weekend at the family estate, and she had personally dropped him off there just yesterday. Valery had even mentioned she was taking him to a reunion today. So why on earth were they here?!
Valery wore a warm, gentle smile, gazing at Sylvie with absolute maternal affection.
Hulda had only ever seen that look on Valery's face once—on the day she gave birth.
That day, Valery had looked at her apologetically and said, "I'm sorry, Hulda. You've been through so much."
But it was a fleeting moment. Soon after, Valery reverted to being the distant, elitist mother-in-law she had always been.
Standing between Valery and Herbert, Miles didn't show an ounce of stage fright despite the crowd. Instead, he grinned up at Sylvie.
Her own son's radiant smile felt like a knife twisting into Hulda's ribs. The suffocating pain made her ears ring so loudly that she completely tuned out the entire duration of the parents' speeches.
It wasn't until the MC handed the microphone down to little Miles that she snapped back to reality.
"Young man, is there anything you'd like to say?"
Miles took the mic with the poise of a tiny adult, looking up at his father, then at the woman standing beside him.
Herbert's handsome face broke into a tender, doting smile as his long fingers affectionately ruffled his son's hair.
Under the watchful eyes of everyone in the room, Miles's sweet, childish voice echoed through the speakers. "I'm so happy that Sylvie is going to be my mom now! I love Sylvie, and I love having her as my mom!"
