Remembering something else, Herbert continued, "As for your family situation... Once things settle down, I'll go over there and explain everything in person."
He was overwhelmingly busy right now. He had to prep for his meeting next week with the new R&D director from Conrad's institute, manage the company's crisis, and prepare for his promotion to full professor. On top of that, he was helping his father track down a vanished phantom player.
It was just one endless task after another. He genuinely didn't have the time.
And since Hulda was being so incredibly stubborn, he had zero desire to waste energy arguing with her about this anymore. It was easier to just wait until he had some downtime to personally visit Sylvie's family and clear the air.
At the mention of her family, Sylvie lowered her eyes. "There's no need. I've already explained it to them. They don't understand—they said my ruined reputation makes them a laughingstock back home and want to force me into another marriage. But it's fine. I'll just keep my distance for a while. My family isn't the biggest issue right now..."
Despite her brave front, Herbert easily caught the strained undertone in her voice. "If you're facing any difficulties, just tell me."
Sylvie looked conflicted, as if the words were painfully difficult to speak, but she eventually forced them out. "It's my apartment... My roommate is from my hometown too. She found out about the wedding incident... I just can't keep living with her. Plus, she knows my parents. My dad could use her to track me down at any moment and drag me back to marry that man... So, I really need to find a new place to live immediately."
Hearing this, Miles looked frantically at Herbert. "No! I don't want Sylvie to marry a fool! Dad, you have to do something! You have to help her!"
Herbert nodded and cut straight to the chase. "Don't worry about it. Until you find a suitable place, you can stay here."
"What?" Sylvie blinked in shock, looking deeply troubled. "Mr. Jewell, I don't think that's appropriate. Mrs. Jewell already misunderstood things because of me. If I move in, won't it just make her angrier?"
At the mention of Hulda, Herbert's eyes turned ice-cold. "What right does she have to be angry? If she hadn't thrown such an irrational tantrum, things wouldn't have escalated to this point. You stay here, with peace of mind. She doesn't call the shots in this house."
Thrilled by the news, Miles cheered and danced around. "Yes! Now I get to see Sylvie every single day!"
Standing off to the side, Callie felt a deep sense of unease. But seeing how genuinely pitiful the girl looked, she kept her mouth shut.
