Miles bolted into the kitchen and instantly spotted a figure in Hulda's pajamas busily working at the stove.
"Mom!" he shouted. He was just about to ask what she was making for breakfast when the woman turned around.
"Good morning, Miles," Sylvie greeted him with a bright smile.
Miles froze.
It wasn't his mom. It was Sylvie...
Herbert walked in just behind him. Seeing Sylvie wearing Hulda's pajamas, he paused.
Noticing his gaze, Sylvie hurriedly explained, "Oh, I stayed up so late playing with Miles last night, and Callie was already asleep. I didn't want to wake her to ask for sleepwear, so I... borrowed Mrs. Jewell's without asking... I'm sorry, Mr. Jewell. I'll make sure it's washed."
Herbert retracted his gaze, entirely unbothered. "It's fine. It's just a set of pajamas. She has plenty; she won't miss one."
Dismissing the matter, he turned to Callie. "Where's my wife?"
Callie offered a strained smile and told the truth. "She's not here."
Herbert's face darkened.
That woman was getting more brazen by the minute—actually staying out all night.
"Should I give her a call?" Callie offered.
"Leave her be," Herbert ordered coldly, taking his usual seat at the dining table.
Only after sitting down did it register that Hulda wasn't there, which meant no one had prepared his specific breakfast.
A second later, Sylvie walked over carrying a tray, placing bowls of hot oatmeal on the table.
"I woke up early, so I took the liberty of making breakfast." After setting down the bowls, she returned to the kitchen for pastries and side dishes.
Once everything was laid out, she sat down directly across from Herbert. That seat had always belonged exclusively to Hulda.
"When I lived at home, I cooked all the time. My parents and brother loved my food. Please, Mr. Jewell, Miles, try some," she said, using her utensils to place a pastry on both of their plates.
