Herbert remembered the post the supplier had mentioned on the phone. At the time, he assumed Miles had posted a picture of himself and Hulda.
Hearing Callie's words, he pulled out his phone and checked his son's profile. Only then did he see that the photo under the caption "Me and my favorite mom" was actually of Miles and Sylvie.
And the very first person to like it was Hulda.
The second was his sister, Cora.
"Miles, what is the meaning of this? Do you not know who your mother is? Is this the kind of nonsense you should be posting?" For once, Herbert was genuinely furious with his son. He didn't raise his voice, but his gaze was chillingly severe.
Miles immediately burst into tears, shrinking into Sylvie's arms for protection. "I didn't post nonsense! I want Sylvie to be my mom! I don't want my mom anymore! She doesn't even come to pick me up! She's completely useless, and I don't want her!"
Seeing Herbert's rising anger, Sylvie held the boy tighter. "Mr. Jewell, please don't blame him. He just posted it out of anger because he wants Mrs. Jewell to pay more attention to him. It's really my fault. I wasn't paying attention when he posted it. If I had noticed earlier, I would have stopped him, and she wouldn't have misunderstood."
"This is all my fault..." Sylvie's nose and eyes reddened again as fresh tears cascaded down her cheeks.
She looked exactly like a wrongfully accused child swallowing her grievances—pitiful, helpless, yet trying to be strong.
Herbert's expression softened slightly, his tone growing gentler. "It's not your fault. The boy is spoiled rotten by his mother. God knows how Hulda has been raising him."
With that, he went to call Hulda.
As he dialed, he remembered he had blocked her number that morning.
After unblocking her, he dialed again.
The first call was instantly rejected.
