After leaving the sanatorium, Hulda headed straight for Herbert's place.
On the way, she called him twice to see if he was home, but he hung up on her both times.
This wasn't the first time he had declined her calls, and she was long past caring.
Since he wouldn't answer, she simply sent him a text.
[Are you home? The divorce papers are finalized. I'm bringing them over now.]
The message sank like a stone in the ocean.
She had briefly considered using the City-Wide Express Courier or a delivery service, mostly because she couldn't stomach the thought of seeing his sour face again.
But then she reconsidered. The divorce documents were crucial, and if something went wrong during delivery, it would be a disaster.
So, she decided to drop them off in person.
It didn't take long to arrive at the house they had once shared.
The front gate was unlocked, so she parked and walked right in, only pausing when she reached the front door.
After a moment's thought, she chose to ring the doorbell.
Since they were officially divorced, she was nothing more than an ex-wife with no ties to him. Ringing the bell was the only appropriate thing to do.
Even if Herbert wasn't home at this hour, Callie should be, so Hulda wasn't worried about being locked out.
Sure enough, the door swung open shortly after.
But it wasn't Callie standing there. It was Sylvie, dressed in her pajamas.
