"Sylvie? What are you doing here?" Justin blinked in surprise.

She had left the office earlier than him in a frantic rush. He assumed she had some sort of emergency, only to find her casually walking around the Jewell Estate.

Aside from Wade, Sylvie knew everyone in the room, so she didn't look the least bit intimidated. She desperately wanted to make a stellar first impression on Herbert's father.

She walked down the remaining steps with poised elegance, greeting everyone with a warm smile before turning her full attention to the older man. "Good evening, Mr. Jewell. I'm Herbert Jewell's student and employee, Sylvie Sinclair."

Wade instantly recognized the name. He had heard Herbert praise her, his wife and daughter rave about her, and even his grandson talk about her constantly. And they had all sung her praises to the heavens.

Seeing her in person now—beautiful, well-mannered, and articulate—he was thoroughly impressed. She had an impressive academic background, she was his son's trusted right-hand woman, and she had pulled herself up from a small town through sheer hard work.

To a traditional man like Wade, Sylvie checked all the boxes.

"It's a pleasure. My family speaks of you often. You're an incredibly capable and inspiring young woman."

Sylvie shook her head with perfect humility. "Mr. Jewell is the truly brilliant one. I still have so much to learn from him, and I'll continue to work hard to prove myself."

Comparisons were inevitable. Staring at this bright, eager young woman, Wade couldn't help but think of his useless daughter-in-law. His gaze toward Sylvie softened even more.

Noticing the empty bowls on her tray, Herbert finally snapped out of his daze. "Sylvie, why are you here?"

Caught off guard by the direct question, Sylvie's knuckles whitened around the edges of the tray. "I..."

"I called her over," Cora proudly interrupted. "Miles loves her, so I told her to come keep him company."

Herbert's brow furrowed. He desperately wanted to scold his sister for meddling, but with Justin and his parents right there, he couldn't do it without humiliating Sylvie in the process. Ultimately, he bit his tongue.
