Initially, when the waitress had seen Melanie, Bryant, and little Elina, she had assumed they were a standard nuclear family. But twenty minutes later, a fourth person had crashed the booth.
The newcomer was drop-dead gorgeous, with the striking presence of an A-list celebrity. He sat firmly glued to Melanie's side, while the man the waitress had assumed was the father sat across from them with the child. The territorial divide was glaringly obvious.
What kind of family dynamic was this? Two dads?
The waitress gave a slight shudder, quickly placed the dishes on the table, and scurried away, not daring to ask.
Though the waitress hadn't uttered a word, Melanie could easily read the bewilderment in her eyes.
"Why did you have to crash this?" Melanie leaned closer to Preston, whispering. "This is a family restaurant."
Preston shot her a dark, sideways glance. "Because it's a family restaurant. That's exactly why I'm here."
Melanie blinked, instantly catching his meaning. Because of the restaurant's theme, if she had dined alone with Bryant and Elina, everyone would have assumed they were husband, wife, and child.
"You're so petty," she muttered under her breath.
Preston didn't seem to care about the insult. He skillfully peeled the shells off the lychees from his plate and placed the sweet fruit onto Melanie's.
Bryant watched the exchange with a puzzled frown. "Preston... you don't take your gloves off to peel lychees?"
Preston's hands paused for a fraction of a second, but he kept his eyes lowered, ignoring the question entirely.
