"Miss Langley, how about we make a bet?"
The supreme confidence radiating from Melanie's smile left Leila completely baffled.
Was this girl really going to dig her own grave in front of everyone?
"Fine by me! What are the stakes?"
As soon as Leila agreed, she watched Melanie actively wave over the media crews covering the expo.
"I'd like to ask our friends in the press to serve as witnesses... This jewelry designer, Miss Langley, is publicly slandering the quality of the Royce Group's current crop of Arctic Burdock Root. So, I'm making a bet with her... Once this batch matures, I will invite everyone back for a live-streamed quality inspection. If the quality fails to meet industry standards... I will personally hand Miss Langley a cool hundred million dollars."
Melanie said, holding up a single index finger.
"One hundred million dollars."
"Melanie!"
Everett practically screamed in panic.
The crowd surrounding them froze, completely stunned.
Leila's eyes bugged out of her head.
She wanted to burst out laughing, but with the media cameras trained directly on her, she had to maintain some semblance of poise.
One hundred million dollars!
Melanie was actually betting her a hundred million dollars!
Leila felt like she had just won the lottery.
"You're on!"
She accepted without missing a beat.
Seeing Leila take the bait so easily, Melanie offered a subtle, dangerous smile.
"Aren't you going to ask... what I'll demand from you if the quality does meet the standards?"
"Whatever you want."
Leila's response was absolute and brimming with arrogance.
Because there was literally zero chance the Royce Group's roots would pass inspection!
"You said it, not me."
Seeing Melanie's eyes light up, Leila casually patted her own chest.
"That's right, I said it. If I, Leila Langley, lose this bet, I will agree to absolutely any condition you set!"
Turning dramatically, she faced the flashing lenses of the media.
"What do you think you're doing?"
Everett tried to yank his phone free, but it wouldn't budge an inch.
"Preston, remember your place! You're just an assistant!"
Everett snapped, trying to throw his weight around, but Preston didn't even flinch.
"Do you not trust her?"
"This isn't about trust!"
"It is."
"You..."
Everett realized he couldn't reason with the man.
Preston's family had gone bankrupt, and he was currently nothing more than a lowly assistant at the Royce Group, completely subordinate to Everett.
Yet, for some infuriating reason, Everett felt utterly powerless against him.
While Preston intercepted Everett's call, Melanie turned back to the cameras, ready to drop another bombshell.
"There is one more thing I'd like to announce..."
