Everett Kingsley strode into view, sharp in a tailored suit, his expression hardened with hostility.
Preston lowered his gaze slightly, instinctively sizing the man up.
He vividly remembered the first time he had seen Everett, back when the man was disheveled, destitute, and broken.
But...
Back then, the look in his eyes had been innocent. Pure. Untainted by the filth of the corporate world.
But now...
He was dressed in imported luxury from head to toe, looking every inch the refined executive.
But that pure light in his eyes was dead, replaced by something murky and unreadable.
"Melanie, is he bothering you? Do you need me to throw him out?"
Everett stepped in front of her, puffing his chest out as he spoke.
Before she could even open her mouth, Preston cut in smoothly.
"I'm fairly certain you're the one who won't leave her alone."
"Me?"
Everett raised a brow, scoffing.
"I am the COO of the Royce Group. I am her colleague. My place is right by her side... it's just business."
The arrogance in his tone caught her totally off guard.
She looked at him, noticing that he was glaring daggers directly at Preston.
Something about him had fundamentally shifted.
The old Everett would never have spoken like this.
He used to be a ghost in the background, a perpetual peacemaker who avoided conflict at all costs.
But now, he reeked of a bitter, hostile arrogance.
She had no idea if her father had poisoned his mind, or if the power had simply gone to his head.
Personally, she infinitely preferred the old him.
"Everett is absolutely right."
A booming, authoritative voice echoed down the hall.
It was Nathaniel Royce.
The moment he spotted Preston standing next to his daughter, blatant displeasure washed over his face.
Right. Her father still thought Preston was just some random middle manager.
Not the CEO who practically owned the city.
"Dad, the thing is..."
"Mr. Royce is completely right."
Before she could ruin the illusion, Preston calmly validated the older man's assumption.
She whipped her head around, staring at him like he had lost his mind.
He didn't even glance at her, holding Nathaniel's gaze with sickeningly perfect sincerity.
"My family lost everything, and I lost my position at Stellaris PharmaTech..."
Melanie's jaw practically hit the floor.
"I dropped her off today because I had a favor to ask... Chairman Royce, for old times' sake, would you consider hiring me? I just heard... her assistant recently quit."
Listening to his flawless, Oscar-worthy performance, her eye twitched violently. She leaned in, hissing through her teeth.
"My assistant quit? Since when?"
Just then, the HR Director came sprinting frantically down the hall.
