Melanie's eyes went wide.
"Wait, you had feelings for me four years ago?"
Preston just stared at her in silence.
Seeing his utterly speechless expression, Melanie rubbed her nose and laughed awkwardly.
"Now that I think about it, you talked even less back then than you do now! Plus, I was so hyper-focused on making that cream for you..."
She genuinely tried to defend herself. "And you didn't exactly make it obvious! I honestly thought you viewed me as some kind of mad scientist!"
"If I had made it even slightly obvious back then, you would have run for the hills! After all..."
He stopped himself.
After all, half his face had been covered in a hideous, terrifying scar. He was ugly.
"Fair point," Melanie conceded with an honest shrug.
"I was just a young girl in the middle of nowhere. Looking back, it was incredibly dangerous. I still have no idea why I felt so perfectly safe around you."
Thinking about her reckless past choices, she found it hard to believe.
If the guy hadn't been Preston, she could have ended up dead in a ditch.
A cold shiver actually ran down her spine.
"Because you just saw me as a patient who needed treating," Preston answered softly, filling in the blanks.
"But I..."
Suddenly, their eyes locked. The suppressed, scorching possessiveness blazing in Preston's dark gaze genuinely startled her.
Instinctively, she lowered her head.
"So... your approaching me now has nothing to do with my mother's accident. It's just because I helped you four years ago, I cured your face, and you wanted to repay the favor by offering yourself to me—"
Before she could finish the sentence, Preston pressed a finger against her lips.
"I didn't approach you to repay a favor. I approached you because I'm wildly in love with you," he stated with absolute gravity.
Was she curious?
Fiercely.
But she didn't push.
Given their current tangled dynamic, it was best not to dig too deep.
"Now... do you believe me? From the very beginning, I came to you for you. It has absolutely nothing to do with your mother's accident, or Stellaris's old research projects."
Preston's voice was absolute as he stepped closer.
He wasn't even touching her, but whether it was his suffocating pheromones or his dominating aura, every instinct in Melanie's body screamed at her to retreat. She instinctively backed away.
"I just wanted to see you... I wanted to come back when I finally had an identity worthy of standing next to you."
With every step she took backward, he advanced, relentlessly backing her into a corner.
Her shoulder accidentally brushed against a set of metal chains hanging from the wall. The sharp clinking sound made her jump. It was only then she realized she had been backed right into a rack of BDSM equipment.
