"The medication you made?"
Preston looked up, his eyes filled with astonishment.
"Yeah! What did you think I was doing all this time? Why else would I have you stay here?"
Melanie walked over and retrieved the concoction.
The moment Preston smelled it, his brows knitted together.
The scent wasn't just bitter; it was bizarre.
Even though he had lived in this small town his whole life, he had seen traditional herbal medicine before. None of it looked or smelled like the bizarre, vividly weird paste Melanie was holding.
"What's with that look? Let me tell you, my pharmaceutical skills are top-tier. You're incredibly lucky to have met me."
Seeing her brimming with arrogant confidence, Preston silently nodded.
He genuinely agreed. Meeting Melanie was the luckiest thing that had ever happened to him.
In the past, whether he was getting beaten by his father or just walking down the street, people always took the long way around to avoid him.
"Thank you..."
His voice was quiet, but the absolute sincerity and raw gratitude in his tone were unmistakable.
Melanie could tell he was a deeply appreciative person.
Otherwise, he wouldn't have tolerated his parents' abuse for so long.
"Alright, no need to thank me. Since I decided to help you, I'm going to see it through to the end."
She handed him the medicine.
"Try it first. If it doesn't work, I'll keep refining the formula."
"Okay," Preston agreed without a second thought.
Melanie couldn't help but laugh.
"You don't even know who I am or what I do, and you're just perfectly happy to be my guinea pig?"
Preston took the container. "Didn't you say your pharmaceutical skills were top-tier?"
"What if I was lying to you?"
"I wouldn't care."
Every morning, she made him toast with strawberry jam and poured him a glass of milk. It was easy to make and easy to buy.
For lunch and dinner, she usually cooked, most frequently making her signature Braised Beef Linguine.
She loved it herself and always paired it with an ice-cold Lychee Spritz.
Preston only ate the pasta and refused the soda.
Until one day, Melanie finally perfected the formula to its optimal state.
"I really did my best. The odds are fifty-fifty. I can't guarantee it will completely erase the birthmark..."
Melanie sat at the dining table and pushed two items toward him.
One was a fresh, steaming bowl of Braised Beef Linguine. The other was her newly formulated scar-removal cream.
"Today... is the last day of my lease. I'm leaving. I'm heading back."
The moment the words left her mouth, Preston's head snapped up. His dark eyes widened, staring at her in sheer shock.
Melanie saw the devastation and intense reluctance swirling in his gaze.
She quickly looked away.
