Preston was utterly dumbfounded, his mouth dropping open wide enough to fit an apple.
Melanie quickly looked away.
His birthmark was startling enough on its own; making such an exaggerated expression only made it worse.
"But... is that... a good idea... I'm a guy..."
She gave him a quick sideways glance.
"Yeah, you definitely don't look like a girl."
Preston was speechless.
"This is for the swelling. Put it on yourself."
She tossed a tube of ointment at him and went back to her work.
He muttered a quiet thank you, clutching the tube with both hands as if it were a priceless treasure.
And so, he stayed the night in her rented apartment.
Preston was well aware of his own appearance.
Forget someone as beautiful as Melanie—even his fat, pig-headed boss at the factory thought he looked terrifying.
The apartment didn't have a spare room; there was only one bedroom.
He knew that even if he stayed, he would definitely be sleeping on the floor.
Of course, if she let him sleep on the sofa, that would be even better.
Melanie was busy tinkering with the limited ingredients she had on hand.
Relying solely on this batch to invent a miracle cure for his birthmark was a pipe dream.
She was an expert in Advanced Bio-Pharmacology, not a wizard.
She was just running some initial tests with what she had.
The real reason she had asked him to stay was that creating a treatment wouldn't happen overnight.
Besides, in her eyes, staying here had to be better than him going back to wherever he came from.
Those vicious curses she heard in the alley earlier were most likely from his own family.
His face truly was difficult to look at.
When she finally snapped out of her focus and looked over at him, she realized he had fallen asleep sitting up.
His head was still bowed, his long, messy bangs covering most of his face.
But even then, she could feel his exhaustion.
Not just physical exhaustion, but mental fatigue as well.
"Living with a face like that... you've had it rough," she whispered, a strong surge of sympathy rising in her chest.
"You can have the sofa. Get some good sleep!"
Originally, she meant to grab his shoulders and help him lie down properly.
But he was heavier than she anticipated. Losing her balance, she pitched forward and fell right on top of him.
Preston jolted awake, instinctively wrapping his arms around the person crashing into him.
His hands landed perfectly on her waist.
Feeling the slender, soft curve of her waist against his palms, he was struck by a mix of shock and pure joy.
But terrified that she would think he was a creep taking advantage of her, he hurriedly and awkwardly let go, whipping his head to the side.
