But it was obvious Shawn had come completely prepared today.
If Preston hadn't brought his own security detail, he was in serious trouble.
A smart man knew when to fold a bad hand.
Melanie shot Preston a desperate look, silently begging him to stand down.
Shawn didn't miss the subtle exchange.
"Angel, you really are protective of your ex... You're that terrified I'm going to hurt him?"
Shawn taunted, but Melanie offered zero response.
He shrugged with a dark chuckle.
"If Mr. Whitmore backs down, it just proves he's a total coward... But if you don't, I don't think you're walking out of here in one piece!"
He delivered the threat casually, but it was dripping with lethal intent.
He wanted Melanie to watch her so-called man beg for mercy.
A suffocating silence blanketed Eclipse Noir Club.
Catching Melanie's warning glance, Preston knew she was begging him not to escalate the bloodbath.
Suddenly, Shawn physically stepped between them, severing their connection.
"What are you looking at?"
Shawn waved a hand right in front of Preston's face.
"Angel made herself perfectly clear... She wants you to surrender so she never has to deal with you again."
At that, Melanie shot Shawn an incredibly annoyed glare.
That wasn't what she meant at all...
And Shawn knew damn well it wasn't what she meant.
Shawn had a literal army with him, while Preston was completely alone.
If they threw down, Preston wouldn't stand a chance.
Even if they called the cops, the damage would be done long before the sirens arrived.
Plus, as long as Shawn didn't throw a punch himself, the police couldn't pin it on him.
They'd just arrest a few foot soldiers and call it a day.
That was exactly why Shawn was so violently arrogant.
Ignoring Melanie's furious glare, Shawn flashed a blinding grin.
His somber gaze was like a terrifying abyss—utterly impossible to read.
The frustration boiling in Shawn's eyes reached a fever pitch.
While Preston's eyes slowly filled with pure mockery—
A ruthless, absolute dismissal of Shawn Sterling.
Stepping out into the street, Melanie turned back and realized the entire army was spilling out behind her.
Shawn and his goons poured onto the sidewalk, every single one of them looking violently stressed.
Especially Shawn.
"Angel, something urgent came up at the office. I have to go... Next time I see you, I'll bring you a gift."
Shawn forced a smile at Melanie, before shooting Preston one final, venomous glare.
Within seconds, the entire unwelcome mob piled into their cars and vanished from sight.
Melanie tilted her head, noting just how humiliating that rapid retreat really was.
Her eyes drifted over to Preston's impossibly handsome face, and she finally asked,
"What exactly did you do to him?"
