“Did you hear? Massive news!”
In the women's restroom at Stellaris PharmaTech, Regina Lane touched up her makeup in the mirror while chatting on her Bluetooth earpiece with Hazel Carring.
“What's so huge that I need to hear about it? My current experiment has my head spinning. Give me something good to take the edge off,” Hazel's exhausted, irritable voice drifted through the earpiece.
“Melanie Royce dumped her boyfriend!”
“Holy shit!”
That instantly woke Hazel up.
“When did this happen? Who dumped who?”
“Melanie dumped him, obviously!”
Until now, Regina had not revealed to anyone that Melanie's boyfriend, Preston Whitmore, was actually the head of Stellaris PharmaTech.
Because of this, Hazel simply thought Melanie had dumped an exceptionally gorgeous guy.
“Did she think he was just a pretty face? Even so, that's no reason to dump him. With a face like that, she could have at least kept him around as a backup plan!”
Regina didn't know whether to laugh or cry at that.
To think the big boss of Stellaris was only fit to be Melanie's backup plan.
“Well, maybe he wasn't even good enough for that!”
Regina delivered one last casual blow to Preston's ego as she strolled out of the restroom.
Gossip always traveled faster than light.
By the end of the morning, news of their breakup had practically circled the globe.
And it was entirely one-sided on Melanie's part.
Preston hadn't even seen it coming.
Over at the Royce Group, nobody across any department was in the mood to work.
“Think about it. Her guy has the looks, he has the body. What's he missing? A real job!”
“Money matters way more than a pretty face. I heard a while ago that he was perfect except for his career. Sure, he got transferred to Stellaris headquarters, but he was just an office drone.”
“But didn't people say his family was in business and pretty loaded?”
“Exactly! His family used to be doing fine. Now, they must have gone under. That's why Ms. Royce cut her losses and dropped him.”
After hearing that analysis, one woman felt a little bad for Preston.
“Is Ms. Royce really that shallow? And dumping a guy right after he loses everything feels kind of cold.”
“Give me a break! If it were you, you'd run faster than anyone! Think about it—bankruptcy means massive debt. Would you want to spend your life paying off someone else's loans before you even tied the knot? Do you want to live paycheck to paycheck?”
The woman went completely silent at that.
“Don't call Ms. Royce shallow. She has her own money and stunning looks. Why should she drag herself down? If you ask me, she made the right call. Better to rip the band-aid off now.”
“Yeah, good point. We should take notes. Don't let a pretty face cloud your judgment.”
