Looking at the corporate hierarchy, it seemed Elara had just positioned herself as Preston's superior.
Melanie pursed her lips, running through the possibilities. Was Elara planning to abuse her newfound authority to force Preston into a corner?
Melanie shook her head, fighting back a laugh. She had been watching way too many Viral Web-Dramas lately. Her imagination was running wild.
In reality, if Elara had the ability to force Preston into submission, their engagement wouldn't have been broken in the first place. While Melanie still didn't know the full details of Preston's background, she knew the Whitmore family was incredibly wealthy—wealthy enough to run in the same circles as the Bennetts. Preston's job at Stellaris was likely just a way for him to gain ground-level experience, or for some other personal reason. He definitely wasn't doing it to put food on the table.
If Elara tried to pull a power trip, Melanie was certain Preston would just quit on the spot rather than give in to her demands.
Right now, Stellaris was heavily implicated in the accident that killed Melanie's mother four years ago. Frankly, Melanie was secretly hoping Preston would quit and cut ties with the company entirely. That way, if she eventually had to take Stellaris down, she wouldn't have to worry about him being caught in the crossfire.
Blinking her long lashes, Melanie refocused on Elara. Even if Elara wasn't the brightest, she had to know a corporate power play wouldn't work on Preston.
Which begged the question: If Elara hadn't joined Stellaris to win Preston back, then what was her real endgame?
"Miss Bennett, this is the R&D Department's dedicated meeting room. Mind telling me why you've dragged half the Administrative Department up here to hijack it?" Regina demanded, planting her hands on her hips, her temper flaring.
"I am the managing director of the Administrative Department. You will address me as Manager Bennett, not Miss Bennett," Elara said, her tone dripping with condescension.
To Melanie, the demand sounded like a blatant provocation. And honestly, bringing this many administrative staff to hijack a room was nothing but a calculated power trip.
"Furthermore, the projector in our department's meeting room is broken. What's the problem with us borrowing yours?" Elara asked, her entitlement grating on Regina's last nerve.
"There are dozens of meeting rooms in this building! Why do you have to take ours?" Regina fired back.
