Gavin raised an eyebrow.
Dominic's words had sparked his interest.
"Belvaria... What were you doing in Belvaria?"
"Looking for... the truth..."
"The truth?"
Now Gavin's curiosity was fully piqued.
However, Dominic was so incredibly drunk that his words came out in disjointed, slurred fragments. His tongue was practically numb, which left Gavin burning with impatience.
"What truth? Come on, man, spit it out. Make it clear."
Clutching an empty liquor bottle, Dominic was barely lucid.
He wasn't completely blacked out, though; he could still hold a conversation with Gavin.
The more anxious Gavin got, the longer Dominic's silences stretched.
Gavin pressed him several times before finally giving up.
He figured Dominic was just trying really hard to string a coherent sentence together.
A long time passed.
It wasn't until Gavin had polished off two whole glasses of lemon water that he finally heard Dominic speak, his voice agonizingly slow.
"The truth I'm talking about... is from back when I went on that school trip to Belvaria... and got bitten by a venomous snake in the nature reserve..."
Gavin knew this story well, of course.
It was precisely because Evelyn had supposedly saved Dominic's life back then that he had been so completely devoted to her, falling deeply and stubbornly in love.
"Actually... it's not true..."
Dominic shook his head.
"That wasn't how it happened at all... The person who saved me... wasn't Evelyn..."
"What?"
Gavin's eyes darted up.
"Evelyn said... she sucked the poisoned blood out for me, and that's why I survived... But... Evelyn was never poisoned... She never... she never sucked any venom out of anything..."
Listening to Dominic, Gavin nodded repeatedly.
He had actually been the first one to spot that logical loophole!
But he had realized it far too late.
Before then, he just hadn't thought to question it.
"So... what happened then?"
"And then, on this trip... I met the person who knows what really happened..."
Because according to Dominic's story, the feelings between him and Melanie had been mutual from the very beginning!
The lifesaver Dominic had been obsessing over, the girl he fell for at first sight, was Melanie—his childhood sweetheart... his arranged fiancée.
And back then, Melanie had liked Dominic too.
At the very least, she certainly hadn't hated him, or else she never would have married him.
But in the end, two people who were essentially in love and had actually tied the knot ended up in a messy, deeply humiliating divorce.
Gavin couldn't help but pat Dominic on the shoulder, offering a word of comfort.
"Tell you what, I'll have a couple of drinks with you. I wasn't planning on it, but..."
Saying that, he flagged the bartender and ordered an Appletini.
Dominic didn't have another drop; one more and he was going to throw up.
"But look, man, so much time has passed. Even if you went and told Melanie the truth now, it'd be almost impossible to win her back."
It was a harsh truth, but Gavin had to say it.
At this point, he was probably the only person left in the world who still considered Dominic a friend.
And as a friend, he had to tell Dominic to cut his losses and walk away before things got worse.
"Melanie isn't the same girl she used to be. She's the CEO of the Royce Group now, and she has a new boyfriend..."
At the mention of the words "new boyfriend," Dominic let out a sudden, contemptuous scoff.
