Runaway Mommy: My Boss is the Father novel Chapter 5

Taking a cab home, Phoebe tiptoed through the door, washed up quietly, and peeked into the small bedroom to check on Mrs. Lennox and Lily, who was sound asleep.

Mrs. Lennox frowned, whispering hoarsely, "Why are you back so late? Are you hungry? Let me heat up some dinner for you."

She started to push herself out of bed.

Phoebe quickly pressed her back down. "I already ate. Go to sleep."

Mrs. Lennox finally settled back under the covers.

To keep from disturbing Phoebe's work, Mrs. Lennox slept in the same room as Lily, leaving Phoebe with her own space.

After the Vance family went bankrupt, Phoebe had rented this cramped, run-down apartment far from the corporate district for the three of them.

Phoebe went to the kitchen and made herself a cup of instant noodles. Sitting in the dark, she scrolled through the messages on her phone.

The entire company forum was exploding, and every single post was about Jaxson.

Phoebe's phone screen was utterly dominated by him.

He was the new executive parachuted in from headquarters, and on top of that, he was drop-dead gorgeous.

The forum was flooded with candid photos taken by her coworkers.

They had dug up tons of background information on him, and every single detail was dripping in gold.

But Phoebe's eyes locked onto one specific sentence.

Worked menial part-time jobs through college, founded Nova Capital without a dime of family support after graduation, became the youngest entry on the Asian billionaires list, and is now the sole public heir to The Hayes Group...

Menial part-time jobs?

So for all those years, she had honestly believed he was just a struggling, broke student. She had constantly worried about protecting his ego, walking on eggshells every time she spent money on him so he wouldn't feel insecure.

Turns out, it was all just a sick joke played by a bored billionaire heir.

Phoebe remembered the crushing words she had heard him say that day. "I never really took Phoebe seriously anyway."

It made sense.

Even back then, they were from entirely different worlds.

He was noble and aloof, brilliant in his academics, admitted to Amherst University as the top scorer in their flagship program.
