Runaway Mommy: My Boss is the Father novel Chapter 34

Back then, his words had broken her heart.

She cried secretly in her dorm room, terrified of letting him find out.

She truly loved Jaxson.

But Jaxson was always aloof and indifferent, keeping everyone—including her—at arm's length.

When Heather Brooks walked into the dorm, she spotted Phoebe face down on her bed, quietly wiping away tears. Her eyes were rimmed red, and she was tightly clutching an ugly plush bear Jaxson had won for her at a claw machine.

Phoebe was naturally radiant and stunning. Even crying in secret, with tears tracing down her luminous skin, she looked tragically beautiful.

It was the kind of beauty that made people sick with jealousy.

Heather asked, her tone carrying a faint, unmistakable edge of glee, “What's wrong? Did you and Jaxson get into a fight?”

At the time, things hadn't escalated between them yet, and their relationship was still civil.

But Phoebe was too heartbroken to entertain idle chatter.

“I'm fine. I'm just going to sleep, don't worry about me.”

Heather just gave a nonchalant, “Oh.”

And she really didn't worry about Phoebe.

A few moments later, she slipped on her headphones and started gaming. Then, she pulled them off and called out, “Phoebe, my headphones are dead, so I'm gonna play on speakers.”

The game was incredibly loud, making it impossible for Phoebe to sleep.

She pulled back her bed curtain, intending to see what game Heather was so obsessed with.

But through the gap, she saw something else entirely. Heather had a gaming video blasting at max volume on her laptop, but she was physically sitting at Phoebe's desk, aggressively slathering Phoebe's expensive skincare all over her own face.

She yanked open a drawer and casually swiped a few pieces of jewelry Phoebe had just bought.

Clipped into her hair was the exact hairpin Phoebe had lost a year ago, glittering brightly under the dorm lights.

Then, Phoebe watched as Heather grabbed a stack of photos Phoebe had printed out to make a custom scrapbook for Jaxson. Heather sifted through them and took a few.

There were solo shots of Jaxson and pictures of him and Phoebe together.

With a pair of scissors, Heather meticulously cut Phoebe out of the frames and pasted her own photo right next to Jaxson's face.

Phoebe's exhaustion evaporated instantly.

All that remained was a chilling wave of horror and absolute, stomach-churning disgust.

Once her mind started drifting, all those college memories came flooding back.

Phoebe shook her head to clear it.
