Runaway Mommy: My Boss is the Father novel Chapter 30

Phoebe never realized it herself.

Whenever she drank, her temper always flared slightly hotter than usual.

Even back when they were dating, alcohol made her drop her usual obedient, eager-to-please act. She would unleash her full spoiled-princess attitude, and if she was in the right mood, she became shockingly aggressive.

Compared to her everyday persona, Jaxson actually vastly preferred her when she was like that.

During their relationship, he had taken her to a few bars, letting her sip on low-proof cocktails.

Under the neon lights that flickered like tropical fish scales, Phoebe's cheeks would flush a deep, gorgeous pink. With a stunning, sultry pout and eyes shimmering with a glassy haze, she would just stare at him.

And she would mumble in that intoxicating, whiny voice.

"Jaxson, I like you so much."

When she was sober, she never called him by his full name.

Jaxson would smirk, hook his arm around her waist, and pull her flush against his chest, physically blocking out the greedy stares from the other men in the bar that always pissed him off.

"I like you too."

Phoebe would blink like she was struggling to process the words, then grab two fistfuls of his collar. "Jaxson, don't lie to me."

The moment she said it, she would pull him down and kiss him fiercely.

Amid the cheers and wolf-whistles of the bar, Jaxson would cup the back of her head and take her mouth, deepening the kiss until she was breathless.

The next morning, Phoebe would completely forget it ever happened.

And Jaxson never brought it up.

Yet just minutes ago, she had used that exact same tone of voice, whining into her phone for another man.

He had seen her step outside to take a call and made an excuse to get some fresh air, pulling out a cigarette.

The moment he stepped out, he heard her say, *Lucas, don't lie to me.*

Maybe his timing was just terrible.

A suffocating, toxic jealousy surged up his throat.

If he had walked out a few seconds earlier, would he have heard her say, *Lucas, I like you so much*?

Despite having smoked for years, Jaxson choked on the drag like a complete amateur.

He coughed violently, several times.
