Runaway Mommy: My Boss is the Father novel Chapter 15

Taking a deep breath, Phoebe yanked the curtain open.

She stared coldly at the furious, foul-mouthed old woman.

"If you don't watch your mouth, your descendants will pay the price."

Phoebe was wearing a mask. Her face was small, so the mask covered most of it, leaving only her beautiful, fury-filled eyes exposed.

Martha raised her voice. "What does it have to do with you?"

The doctor walked in with the medication. "What's all this noise? If you're not here for treatment, get out."

"This is a hospital, not a farmer's market."

With her precious grandson sick, Martha was already blaming Phoebe and Lily for everything. Now, interrupted by this stranger's anger, she was even more furious.

She raised her hand to slap Phoebe across the face. The movement was so fast, and since Phoebe was holding Lily, all she could do was grit her teeth, close her eyes, and turn her head away.

But the slap never landed.

Jaxson grabbed Martha's wrist. Frowning deeply, he shoved the old woman's hand aside.

Phoebe opened her eyes in mild surprise.

Why was Jaxson here?

Remembering the call, she assumed he had rushed over because he heard his wife and child were here.

Seeing Jaxson, Martha instantly lost her aggressive edge and stood silently to the side.

Jaxson glanced at Martha, then shifted his gaze. "How is Theo?"

Jaxson's breathing was unsteady, meaning he must have sprinted in. It was obvious how much he cared about Theo.

Taking advantage of the distraction, Phoebe carried Lily away to get her injection.

Valerie explained, "He ate too much at dinner and got indigestion. He has a slight fever, but it's nothing serious."

They said Theo was being disciplined, but every time Valerie tried to smack him, Martha would jump in to stop her. The chubby boy was just screaming for show.

"Jaxson, why are you here?"

"Allergies. I came to get some medicine."

While driving, Jaxson noticed Lily's jacket in the backseat and called Phoebe. Hearing the argument on the other end, he quickly parked and rushed into the emergency room.

He thought back to how Phoebe had just stood there, clutching her child with her eyes closed, bracing for a slap.

A cold, mocking sneer echoed in Jaxson's heart.

The proud, sharp-edged Phoebe from the past had had all her edges ground away by marriage and that useless husband of hers.

He took a deep breath, but something felt lodged in his throat—neither going up nor down.
