Tim nodded in agreement; his jaw set with resolve. “Agreed,” he replied. I will check with my
contacts from the club and human territory to see if I can come up with something.
“One thing surprises me,” James said.
“Which is it?” Tim asked.
“That she is human. The irony is that the Goddess paired him with a human, when even his own
shifter first mate was not strong enough to resist this world and be protected.” James replied.
“We will deal with it once we have her here, but first let’s find her. How the hell could a human leave
the pack territory undetected by the patrol and reach the main road, and from there, to the city.”
Tim asked.
“Unless…” James said suspiciously.
“Unless what?” Tim said.
“Unless she had help to leave the pack…” James added.
“You want to say that someone from the pack helped her leave?” Tim pressed, intrigued.
“Exactly that is what I want to say. Till now, we kept on questioning the guards, the sentinels, but we kept on asking them about the strangers. Let’s narrow it down to the timeline and see which pack members exited the pack.” James added.
“Sounds like a plan! Let’s go.” Tim nodded enthusiastically.
Back in the woods, as Azriel sat by the pack lake, the tranquility of the forest surrounding him, he
couldn’t shake the burning ache deep within his soul. The run and the hunt had provided a
temporary distraction, but now, in the quiet solitude, memories of the past flooded back into him
like a raging river.
He remembered Avril, always like a younger sister to him, and the boys, Tommy, James and Tim.
She and his sister, Kaia, had been close friends for as long as he could remember. In his first year
after he first shifted, he had felt a pang of disappointment when he didn’t immediately find his
mate. But his parents had assured him that each mating bond unfolded in its own time.
Then, the following year, everything changed. Avril, his sister’s good friend, turned out to be his
mate. The realization had hit him like a thunderbolt, shifting all the brotherly affection he had felt for her into something deeper, something primal. Avril became his first kiss, his first love, his first
experience of physical intimacy.

As he gazed out at the tranquil surface of the lake, Azriel couldn’t help but wonder what might have been if Avril hadn’t been taken from him so tragically.
It took just one traitor and several rogues to almost destroy this pack and kill his parents and his
mate while he was away on a treaty visit. He felt her pain through the mate bond, like an iron that
branded his soul. He left the meeting and rushed back to the pack, but when he arrived, it was too
late: his parents, their Beta and his son Tommy, and Avril were all assassinated in a plot for power.
He almost lost his sister Kaia as well, but he succeeded in reaching in time to save her. The event
left everyone traumatized and lost. But what made him snap was when he found out that Avril was
carrying his child, his heir. At that moment, something snapped inside him, and an ice-coldness
covered his soul and heart.
From that moment, he was unhinged at killing rogues and not getting emotionally attached. It was
like the feelings inside him froze. Despite everyone’s surprise, he was single for more than 10
years. Of course, he had his share of sexual releases, but it was not more than one night. He tried
to hide this coldness from everyone around him, but he was just not feeling anything. No love, no sympathy, no burning passion or desire. Everything was automatic, like physical exercise.
The only one knowing the truth was his best friend, Markus, who had helped him till now from being forced into an arranged union by the Council. He was aware that sooner or later he should choose a Luna, but he knew that if this happened it would be a real torture for him and for her.
