“Stop right there. Drop that dangerous idea immediately,” Beckett said with a helpless laugh. “If it were one or two sharks, we’d definitely haul our trophies home. But we’re not talking about one or two-or even ten. There are thousands of them! You’d have to be out of your mind to go scavenging their corpses.”

“Exactly!” Autumn slapped the table. “That’s why it’s such a waste!”

Just then, someone else spoke up. “Wait a second. If mutant sharks are edible, does that mean mutant shark eggs might be edible too?”

“Huh?” Autumn’s frustration vanished instantly, and her eyes lit up. “Now that’s an idea! How about we raid their nest one more time? We’ll bring all the eggs back and let the researchers figure out whether they’re edible. If they are, great-we’ll add them to the menu. If not, we’ll toss the whole batch into the incinerator.”

Beckett considered it for a long moment before saying, “The more you talk, the more tempted I am. But Autumn, why is your first instinct always to raid someone else’s home? You’re ridiculously good at it.”

“So what if I am?” Autumn replied through a mouthful of boxed lunch. “We’ve burned through fuel and ammunition just getting out here. If all we do is kill a few sharks and leave empty-handed, that’s a terrible deal. We don’t do business at a loss.”

“I’ve decided.” She slammed her fist onto the table. “I’m going ashore, and I’m raiding their nest! Same plan as always–you keep the sharks busy and cover me while I steal every last one of those eggs,”

Everyone immediately turned to Beckett.

He was leading this operation. Even Autumn would follow his decision.

Meeting the expectant gazes around him, Beckett weighed it over and over before finally making up his mind. “Safety comes first. Don’t get drawn into a prolonged fight.”

Autumn broke into a wide grin and bumped fists with him. “With all of you backing me up, I’ve got nothing to worry about.”

Beckett returned the fist bump with a sigh.

No wonder he so often forgot she was actually a woman. With her relentless ambition, reckless love of trouble, and untamable spirit, there wasn’t the slightest trace of delicacy about her.

At last, the frigate sailed within sight of the island.

Autumn raised her binoculars and carefully surveyed the shoreline. “Well, would you look at that? I never thought I’d actually witness sharks laying eggs in person. Those sharks are evolving at an incredible pace. They can already leave the water long enough to come ashore and lay their eggs. At this rate, give them a few more generations, and they’ll be able to abandon the ocean entirely and live on land. Heaven really isn’t giving humanity a break. It’s practically forcing us into extinction.”

Beckett lowered his binoculars, his expression growing increasingly grim. “This is even worse than we imagined. How are they evolving this quickly?”

Autumn arched a brow. “If the corpse flower can evolve a brain, then sharks evolving the ability to walk on land doesn’t seem all that unbelievable.”

That was simply how absurd the world had become.

“Chief Bauer!” A messenger announced, standing at attention. “A shark swarm is approaching. And there are a lot of them-our estimate is over 10,000.”

Beckett fell silent in thought.

Autumn spoke first. “Beckett, now that we’ve found this place, we can’t just ignore it. Look at how many eggs are on that island. If they all hatch, imagine how enormous that population will become. This entire stretch of ocean will belong to them. And it’s so close to Aurora Base that our people won’t be able to leave safely. The moment anyone steps outside, they’ll become prey for the sharks. We can’t keep everyone locked inside forever. Even when we evacuate, we’ll have to fight our way through these swarms.”

She continued solemnly, “The best defense is striking first. Even if we can’t wipe but the sharks themselves, we can at least break their breeding cycle. We can slow the growth of their population and buy ourselves more time before we’re forced to leave.”

After listening to her, Beckett slowly nodded. “Autumn, this mission is extremely difficult and extremely dangerous.”

“What mission isn’t?” Autumn had already begun adjusting her gear, securing every piece of equipment until she was armed from head to toe before carefully fastening her curved blade at her waist. “Don’t worry. I happen to value my life very highly. I won’t give death the chance to catch me.”

Beckett raised a salute.
