Originally, Beckett had enforced strict controls over weapon distribution, but a single sentence from Autumn made him lift the restrictions entirely.

She had said, “In the apocalypse, the only person you can rely on is yourself. Waiting for someone else to save you will only get you killed faster. In the end, no one who survives the apocalypse is an innocent lamb.”

So the moment Aurora Base posted the mission, every team confident in its own abilities came to sign up.

After accepting the mission, they exchanged their points for weapons, gathered their crews and boats, and headed out to hunt deep-sea mutant fish.

And surprisingly enough…

The strength of the masses was limitless, and so was their ingenuity.

No matter what methods or tricks they used, three days later, the mission office at Aurora Base actually received its first batch of deep-sea mutant fish.

As the successful team turned in their mission, they openly collected 12,000 points amid countless envious stares.

Every member of the team walked away with anywhere from several hundred to several thousand points.

Those points alone were enough for them to live comfortably for half a year without worrying about food or clothing.

With that successful example, even more teams set out to hunt deep-sea mutant fish.

Of course, not every expedition returned with a catch. Quite a few teams were wiped out completely, with no survivors at all.

That was simply how cruel the apocalypse was.

One day, Autumn was helping Scott tally Aurora Base’s current population. Looking at the figures before him, Scott let out a long sigh. “We had 860,000 people last month. Now we’re down to 840,000. We’ve lost 20,000 people in just one month. At this rate, Aurora Base won’t last much longer before we’re wiped out.”

Autumn, however, remained optimistic. She idly twirled a pen between her fingers as she replied, “Isn’t that perfectly normal? Those 20,000 were clearly people who couldn’t adapt to the apocalypse and were eliminated. Survival of the fittest-that’s one of nature’s most basic laws. Don’t worry, we won’t all die out. People forged by the apocalypse only become stronger, while the weak are weeded out. Just wait. Before long, those elite mercenary teams will become the backbone of the base.”

Just then, James hurried into the room. “Asher, Scott! Good, you’re both here!”

“What happened?” Autumn asked immediately.

“Something did happen, though I’d call it good news.” James smiled. “One of Mr. Wright’s teams just returned from outside and reported finding a small island covered with shark eggs.”

Autumn shot to her feet. “I’m going over there right now.”

“Be careful!” Scott called after her. “Don’t take unnecessary risks!”

“I know, I know!” Autumn waved without looking back as she jogged out of the room.

She hadn’t left the base in quite some time She’d been so bored she was practically growing roots.

Now that something interesting had finally come up, there was no way she was going to miss it.

By the time Autumn arrived at Leonel’s headquarters, several researchers in white lab coats were already examining the shark eggs that had been brought back.

“These appear to be mutant shark eggs,” one of the men said, pointing at an egg in his hand. “Normal shark eggs don’t look like this, and they certainly wouldn’t be found on an island. Generally speaking, sharks reproduce in three ways: oviparity, viviparity, and ovoviviparity.

“Oviparous sharks lay eggs enclosed in thick egg cases that attach themselves to rocks or seaweed to protect them from predators. Ovoviviparous sharks retain fertilized eggs inside the uterus, where the embryos develop using nutrients from the yolk sac or additional eggs released into the uterus, without forming a placenta. Viviparous sharks also retain fertilized eggs inside the uterus, but the embryos receive nutrients through a yolk-sac placenta and, in later stages, from uterine secretions until the pups are almost fully developed before birth.

“But look at these eggs.” The expert held one up. “Their shells are exceptionally thick. Don’t they resemble the eggs of land animals more than marine ones? That suggests these mutant sharks have begun evolving toward terrestrial life. Once they adapt to living on land, humanity will face a catastrophe. No matter how powerful our weapons become, they won’t be enough to stop them.”

The expert sounded decidedly pessimistic.

Unable to resist, Autumn stepped closer. “If sharks come onto land, wouldn’t they basically just be like crocodiles? Crocodiles are powerful too, but they never ended up ruling the planet.”
