Chapter 194 The Door in the Wall
Thapter 194 The Door in the Wall
Erling and Autumn were about the same height and build.
Autumn mimicked the way Erling had walked and started forward.
The imitation really did come out almost spot-on.
Sure enough, she’d taken only a few steps when someone spotted her and gave a respectfut nod. “Mr. Erling.”

Behind the mask, Autumn muffled her voice. “Mm. My father sent me down to check. Everything running smoothly here?”
“It is. But didn’t Mr. Griffin already come through today?” the man asked, puzzled. “We didn’t get any word from up tap that you’d be coming.”
“My father sent me down last minute. I don’t know why either.” Autumn slipped a note of complaint into her voice. “I’ve got my hands full out there. My father’s always demanding huge batches of young, able-bodied workers. He’s always coming up short, and I’m out running around every single day. Lately they’ve been really hard to grab.”
Hearing Autumn gripe like that, what little suspicion the man had melted clean away.
This was exactly the kind of thing Gordon’s younger son would say.
“Right away. I’ll get the door for you.” The man quickly produced a key and pulled out his radio. “Open the door in there. Mr. Erling’s coming through to take a look.”
About two minutes passed before a wall up ahead that had looked like a solid dead end suddenly split open into a doorway.
Autumn gave a knowing nod.
So this was where it was hidden.
No wonder they could never find it no matter how hard they looked. Who would ever have guessed Gordon’s treasure was tucked away in a place like this?
It was like nesting dolls, one tucked inside another, three layers deep.
Most people would pry open two layers at most and never dream there was a third one hidden inside.
Autumn waited until the door came to a full stop before stepping inside.
Past that door, the world within was nothing like the one outside.
It was dim and freezing cold.
“Mr. Erling, everything we mined this round is right here, and as usual it’ll all be shipped out together tomorrow morning.” The man in charge here spoke up at once. “Take a look.”
Autumn lifted her head and looked.
A colossal worksite sprawling across hundreds of acres opened up before her.
Countless young, able-bodied laborers scurried like worker ants through every deep pit, digging with everything they had

Endless coal came pouring out in a steady stream and was hauled to the great open yard at the center.
By now, the huge yard was packed with coal piles big and small, easily ten thousand tons by the look of it.
“Wonderful,” Autumn said with feeling.
“It sure is.” The manager beside her laid on the flattery. “Mr. Gound had real vision. Ple found this coal mine ages ago and never reported it, and he didn’t start mining it in earnest until the apocalypse hit. With a mine like this, we’re all set for life.”
“I think so too.” Autumn let out a soft laugh. “This really is quite the windfall.”
“What?” The manager didn’t follow.
“I said, it’s time for you all to hit the road.” Autumn suddenly pulled a gas mask and a whole crate of highly toxic gas canisters out of her storage space.
Before anyone could react, Autumn snapped the gas mask on, grabbed one of the canisters, and hurled it hard at the ground.
Crash!
Acrid, stinging gas billowed out in an instant.
The cluster of men standing beside Autumn dropped one after another, thud after thud, before they could get out a single word.
Autumn darted across the yard, flinging canisters until the whole place was blanketed in gas.
The whip-cracking overseers went down before they could stop her or fight back.
Meanwhile, the poor miners just stood frozen where they were, dumbstruck.
Autumn grabbed a bullhorn and shouted at them. “What are you all standing around for? Run! The door’s right over there, get out of here!”
The moment the words landed, someone finally snapped out of it, dropped his tools, and bolted for the door like a madman, and
the rest scrambled after him for their lives.
Every one of them had been tricked or dragged here. Once, they’d all longed to reach the central shelter. They’d come carrying hope, and only after being hauled inside did they realize they’d been conned.
But by then it was far too late, and not one of them could get away.
The brutal daily labor and the scarce food sent their death rate climbing higher and higher.
Yet the overseers here couldn’t have cared less about their lives, since if one died they’d simply grab another, and there were plenty more young and able-bodied out there.
Now, out of nowhere, someone was telling them they were free.
How could they not run?
Once nearly everyone had cleared out, Autumn brought out the real big guns, her poison gas shells.
A few shells later, every last overseer who’d holed up in the pits refusing to come out was done for.
