“If you ask me, we shouldn texplain anything,” Jude said. “No one’s going to believe us anyway. Besides, harvesting them was our plan from the beginning. Otherwise, why did we let them into the city? Why keep pretending?”
Autumn walked alone through the civilian district, holding up a heavy umbrella.
Even though the acid rain was so corrosive, many people still forced themselves outside with bitter expressions, searching for
work.
For them, every point they earned meant another day’s food for the entire family.
Miss a day’s work and everyone went hungry.
f they wanted to survive, they couldn’t stop.
Everyone wore thick clothing and homemade rain gear on their heads. Some used old wooden doors or window frames. Others ayered sheets of plastic with dried grass.
This kind of equipment could only be used once. After a few hours, the acid would eat through it, making it useless.
But as long as people were willing to think of a solution, there was always a way.
nside a shabby shop by the roadside stood several iron cages.
Locked inside the cages weren’t cats or dogs-they were children.
Like little puppies, they clung to the bars, waving their tiny hands constantly in the hope that someone would buy them and take :hem home.
Even though they knew they might not have a better ending after being bought away, they still wanted to escape the iron cages.
There wasn’t just one shop like this. There were many.
People who truly couldn’t survive anymore would come here and sell themselves, asking only for enough food to stay alive.
Autumn walked past without changing her expression. She didn’t stop for them
In the apocalypse, scenes like this were far too common. There was nothing unusual about them.
In fact, even before the apocalypse, centuries ago, during the darkest years of war and famine, scenes like this weren’t uncommon, let alone now.
Hunger knows no law.
Records kept those horrors to a few words. Only those who had witnessed them firsthand understood the weight those words carried.
“Please, take me! I don’t eat much! I’ll serve you however you want! I can do anything!” A young boy waved desperately at Autumn “If you get hungry, you can even eat me! I don’t want to stay here anymore!”
The moment he finished speaking, a slave trader raised his whip and was about to lash the boy.

stum merely glanced at him without trying to stop him.
That single glance made the marrinstinctively step-back awkwardly.
But he quickly puffed himself up again and shouted, “What are you looking at? Can you even afford him?”
“How much is he?” Autumn casually pointed at the boy and asked.
“Him? Two pounds of grain and a bottle of water.” The slave trader answered.
The boy immediately spoke up. “He’s lying! I’m only worth a pound of grain and a bottle of water! He wants to keep the other pound for himself! If the boss finds out, he’ll beat him to death!”
The slave trader flew into a rage and lashed the boy with his whip. “Shut up!”
Autumn looked at the boy. “Why do you want to come with me?”
The boy winced in pain, his face twisted from the beating, but he still forced the words out. “Because if I die by your hand, at least there’ll be enough left of me for a proper burial. If I stay here… I’m afraid there won’t be anything left of me at all.”
Autumn caught the hidden meaning in his words and said, “I’ll take him.”
After saying that, she took a pound of corn and a bottle of water out of her backpack.
The slave trader grumbled. Even so, he accepted the grain and water and released the boy.
The boy was overjoyed. He scrambled to Autumn’s side, wanting to grab her sleeve, but after looking at his own skinny, filthy hands, he timidly pulled them back.
“Come on.” Autumn led the boy to a quiet place and asked, “Now tell me. Who are you really?”
The boy continued pretending to be confused. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Autumn didn’t waste another word. She simply turned around and started walking away.
Just as she expected, the boy hurried in front of her, blocking her path.
Biting his lip, the boy asked, “Didn’t you buy me because you wanted information? Why are you leaving without asking
“You’re pretty sharp for a kid.” Autumn looked at him speechlessly. “Then again, that’s only natural. In the apocalypse, the naive don’t last long. You’re working with that slave trader, aren’t you?”
The moment she finished speaking, people suddenly appeared all around them, blocking every escape route
