Gordon slammed his hand on the table: “Gentlemen, I’m going to find those thieves today. I swear on my name that I’ll kill them None of you has a problem with that, do you?”
Noah nodded. “I agree. The Carters lost three million tons of food. Sorneone has to pay for that.”
Jude said, “I agree too. The Blakes lost two million tons of food, along with oil and medicinal herbs worth 300 million”
Kevin snapped, “My losses were even worse! All that precious ore is gone! How did those thieves move so much of it? We’re talking about mountains of rock! And then there are my granaries. The grain and silage were stored together, and they took both Damn them! What are they planning to do with the silage, eat grass?”
Gordon studied the three men. Their faces were ashen, and their fury looked genuine.
Good. That settles it. The attackers came from outside the central shelter.
Gordon said, “Only a force of at least a 1,000 people could pull off something on this scale. What organization that large is still operating?”
The three representatives considered the question for a long moment before one of them said, “Groups that large existed before the earthquake and tsunami. But once the acid rain began, no one could survive outside. Everyone flooded into the city in a panic. How could an organized force that large still exist?”
Jude frowned. “There is one possibility. The people from Karthmoor. Beckett is the only one with that kind of manpower and resources.”
Kevin said, “That’s impossible. I have informants in Karthmoor. If 1,000 people had mobilized, I would’ve heard about it. Things have been quiet there lately. Everyone is busy growing crops in the caves, and Scott barely has time to sleep. Beckett and Leonel haven’t been seen for days because they’re apparently working on an experiment to develop new seeds. They wouldn’t have time to come here.”
“Then who could it possibly be?” one of them asked. All four men fell silent, lost in thought.
They had come closer to the truth than ever before, only to dismiss it themselves.
Elsewhere, Autumn asked Beckett, “Should we go after those four families now?”
Beckett shook his head. “We got away with it once, so they’ll tighten their security. Those four families are nothing like the small try we’ve targeted so far. Their defenses are the strongest in the shelter, and one mistake could put us in serious danger. We either leave them alone or make sure none of them survives when we strike.”
“We can save them for last,” Leonel said.
“What should I do next, then?” Autumn asked.
Leonel said, “You get some proper rest and leave everything else to us. We can’t let you charge into battle alone every time. We need to make ourselves useful too, don’t we?”
Beckett added, “The main goal is to let you rest and give them time to lower their guard. Once they relax, you can take out the next group.”
Leonel sighed. “Did you really have to say the quiet part out loud?”

Autumn laughed. “Fine. #sten to you.”
Beckett and Leonel exchanged amused smiles.
From that day on, the killer haunting the central shelter seemed to disappear. Gordon and the three ruling families had eagerly set traps to catch the culprit, but all their preparation went to waste.
All their preparations now looked ridiculous.
The attackers had taken everything they wanted and disappeared, apparently with no intention of returning.
The lesser and mid-ranking wealthy families breathed sighs of relief.
Gordon and the three ruling families, however, were furious.
They searched every corner inside and outside the shelter, but they still couldn’t find the group.
Silas’s small building was searched from top to bottom three times a day.
They searched the building but went no further because Silas was their mysterious supplier.
