Chapter 74 No One Has to Die
Just when they thought the last of the beasts were going down, another pack appeared ahead.

Olivia’s voice came through the earpiece, sharp with panic. “Peter, Steven, be careful. There’s a level 2 Ghost–Faced Spider in the group.”
“Can anyone break off and help them?”
No one answered. The rest of the squad was drowning in beasts of their own.
Steven and Peter spoke at the same time. “Don’t bother. We’ve got it.”
Olivia’s silence said everything. “Be careful,” she managed.
Then Darlene’s voice broke through. “Neither of you better die on me!”
Steven smiled. “Better not let her do
old man.”
Peter laughed. “Damn right! Let’s kill these things.”
They grinned at each other and charged.
Two spears split the air, one crackling with lightning, the other trailing fire.
“Charge!”
“That big one’s mine,” Peter called. “You take the rest.”
“Go.”
Steven didn’t argue. Fighting a level 2 beast head–on was still beyond him unless he tapped into his beast- type Divine Sigil.
Peter closed the distance in a blink and engaged the massive Ghost–Faced Spider, a thing nearly the size of a car. Steven threw himself into the swarm of level ls.
With his battle armor boosting him, he was pushing close to 38 points of raw strength. His spearmanship hit harder with every swing. One thrust was enough to cave in a Ghost–Faced Spider’s skull.
Eye of Insight let him read their attacks before they came. He slipped through every strike and picked them apart with brutal precision. One thrust, one kill. No wasted motion.
That was the part Peter couldn’t figure out. The kid seemed to know exactly where every beast was weakest, like he’d studied them for years.
Steven lost count of how many he’d killed. Every strike was clean, every movement ruthless, nothing wasted.
By the time Steven cleared the last level 1 Ghost–Faced Spider and turned around, Peter was already in trouble.
The level 2 spider caught him with a leg and sent him flying. He crashed down at the base of the Barrier

“Peter!” Steven’s face went white. He sprinted toward him, pulling the origin crystal handgun and firing at the spider to slow it down.
He dropped to Peter’s side. “How bad?”
Peter spat blood. His chest wound was pumping freely now, and his face was drained of color. Get out of here. I can’t hold it.”
Why? Why did everyone keep protecting him like this? Why were these people so willing to trade their lives

And in his last life, he’d been a coward. He’d accepted it, told himself that a Rearguard’s job was to give everything for the squad’s retreat, even his life. But every single time, the guilt had eaten him alive.
In a flash of lightning, Peter’s spear took two more of the spider’s legs. But one of its remaining legs punched clean through his thigh.
Peter screamed, eyes flooding red with pain.
Steven’s vision blurred. “Peter!”
The squad heard the raw desperation in his voice, and panic rippled through the comms.
“Peter, pull back!”
“Get out of there!”
