Steven glanced at Peter. “You talk too much. Just rest.”

There was no point in arguing. Rearguards who’d already made peace with dying held onto one thing above, everything else, and that was their team.
Peter studied him for a moment, then shook his head in quiet disbelief. “You know what’s weird about you? You feel like the one who’s been fighting for decades, not me.”
Steven’s mouth curved. “Maybe I have.”
Peter snorted. “You haven’t even finished growing yet, and you’re here acting like some grizzled veteran
Olivia’s voice cut through the earpiece. “Peter, Steven, another wave incoming. Bloodfang Rats and Ghost- Faced Spiders, both. Stay sharp.”
They locked eyes and flipped their mics on.
“Copy.”
“Copy.”
Peter and Steven stood shoulder to shoulder in front of the Barrier stake, spears raised, radiating killing intent.
Chatter filled the comms. “Olivia, these things just keep coming. What the hell is going on?”
“There’s way more than usual.”
The rest of the squad had noticed it too.
“Everyone, hang tight,” Olivia said. “Military Command just confirmed they’re sending a Five–Sigil Divine General to destroy the breach point outside the city. Reinforcements won’t be far behind.” She paused. “Report injuries.”

More beasts were already on their way. The toll on their stamina was brutal.
“Here.” Peter pulled a stamina orb from his spatial converter, a marble–sized capsule of liquid wrapped in thin plastic film, packed with concentrated energy compounds for a quick boost. Steven grabbed it and

swallowed it whole.
He looked at the blood still spreading across Peter’s chest. “Can you keep going?”
Peter laughed. “If you can, I can.”
Another wave hit. Fifteen or more. Without a word, they threw themselves back into the fight.

Peter was getting worse. Blood flowed steadily from the reopened wound. His skin was the color of chalk, Steven fought harder to make up for it, killing everything that came close.
This was what people like them did. Blood painted their armor red, and sparks flew from their spears.
