The squad was shouting over the comms, but none of them could break away.

The spider shrieked and whipped its body around, launching Peter out of the Divine Barrier. Blood sprayed through the air. He landed in Steven’s arms.

The whole squad thought he’d lost his mind. This was practically suicide.

Maybe it was guilt. Maybe he’d already started thinking of Peter and the others as his teammates, really his teammates, in a way he hadn’t allowed himself to feel in his past life. He didn’t want to be that person

He roared. Golden light erupted from his chest and flooded his eyes until they shone solid gold. In that instant, his strength surged back to its peak. The spear in his hands felt alive with power.

Alan spoke first. “Hang in there. It’s almost over.”

“Relax,” Steven said quietly. “As long as I’m here, the stake’s not going anywhere.”

None of them could believe those words had just come from a high schooler who’d awakened days ago.

Steven stood alone, one man, one spear, holding the line. His eyes were steady. As long as he was breathing, nothing below level 3 was getting past him today.

It wasn’t long before the next wave hit. He grabbed Peter’s origin crystal cannon and fired into the swarm.

The cannon tore through a cluster of level 1 Bloodfang Rats, but it ran out of charge fast. He tossed it aside and went in with the spear.

He fought like a man possessed, tearing through the streets, thrusting and slashing until blood and gore filled the air. His own blood mixed with theirs, and he didn’t care.

He’d forgotten everything except the fight. Today wasn’t about survival. It was about burying the guilt he’d carried through an entire lifetime.

The bodies started to pile up around him. His armor was shredded, and wounds covered his body.
