Chapter 360 Embers on the Battlefield

Time seemed to freeze in place. Through the earpiece, every member of the squad could practically hear each other breathing.
The next instant, a violent rumble tore up from beneath the earth, and Steven caught it instantly.
A series of explosions ripped through the ground around him.
Buildings shattered into rubble in the blink of an eye.
Massive sandworms, each one easily six to ten feet wide, burst up out of the earth in a frenzy.
The ground transformed into a cratered wasteland within seconds.
Alan’s voice cut through the chaos.
“Kill them!”
All four of them moved as one.
Theo and Nicole opened fire from above, picking off targets with relentless precision.
Steven surged forward first, charging straight into the fray.
His spear struck with brutal force.
Through the lens of his Eye of Insight, he could pinpoint the exact location of every beast crystal buried inside these sandworms.
His speed left no room for these creatures to even think about retaliating.
He let out a fierce shout and drove his spear straight through one sandworm’s beast crystal in a single thrust.
The impact detonated the creature’s head into a fine mist.
He spun toward the next target without breaking stride.
Every thrust landed clean, and every thrust killed.
These sandworms only ranked as level three beasts, nothing more than the vanguard for the swarm pushing into the city.
As Steven cut down sandworm after sandworm, more beasts surged up from the openings their fallen kin had left behind, gushing out of the earth like water from a broken dam.
A brutal, all out battle erupted across the field.
Most of the beasts pouring out sat at level one or level two, with level three appearing less frequently.
Blooddrinkers and Vanguards‘ job was simple: hunt down the higher level threats first while still clearing out everything else they could.

Alan and Edric tore into the swarm with relentless fury.
Fiona unleashed her own strength with fierce determination burning in her eyes.
She refused to spend another lifetime trapped in someone else’s cage.
She intended to carve her own path forward with her own two hands.
She drove herself headlong into the swarm without hesitation.

Steven let his own strength surge to the surface, the power of Wind and Fire blazing to life around him
He pushed deeper into the beast horde, his focus locked entirely on the level three threats.
Anything weaker barely registered in his mind.
Not a single level one or level two beast could survive even one of his strikes.
A single stomp from him was enough to reduce one to pulp on the ground.
His killing intent was becoming increasingly obvious.
The Dragon Spear in his grip dripped with blood, growing more savage with every swing.
His Eye of Insight gave him an edge no enemy could match.
The spear spun and struck in a relentless rhythm, turning the battlefield into something close to a feast of slaughter.
Nothing could survive within his spear’s reach.
Flesh tore and blood sprayed through the air in violent arcs.
His Vanguard Spearmanship had climbed to its absolute peak.
Combined with the Dragonhowl Spear, nothing could stand against him.
A terrifying aura of Spear Aura wrapped around his entire body.
His technique edged closer and closer to something transcendent.
He drove his spear straight through the skull of a level three Ghost–Faced Spider, and the head burst apart on impact.

Whenever a level three beast appeared in her vicinity, Alan provided ranged support without hesitation.
Theo covered her from above as well.
The situation stayed stable overall.
Through the earpiece, the sounds of Peter and the rest of the Rearguard team clashing with beasts came through loud and clear.
Peter suddenly burst out. “Holy crap! That’s insane!”
“Vice Captain, your girlfriend might actually be stronger than me!”
“What kind of monsters are you two anyway?”

“No way!”
Peter couldn’t stop expressing his amazement.
On Bianca’s side of the field, flames wrapped around her entire body.
She looked like a goddess of fire given physical form.
A faint trace of true divine presence had already begun to take shape around her.
Her blade carried the same unstoppable force.
Throughout the entire fight, she never once flinched or hesitated.
Every strike landed with absolute conviction.
Spending so much time at Steven’s side had given her plenty of lessons in combat technique.
Combined with her natural talent as a born fighter and her sharp instincts, she only grew stronger with every passing moment.
Cutting down beasts had started to come as naturally to her as breathing.
Peter’s voice rang out again. “Vice Captain, you really don’t have to worry about her anymore.”
Steven’s voice answered back regardless. “Just be careful out there, all of you.”
