Chapter 357 No Time to Tarry

Alan looked down at him like he was already staring at a corpse. He didn’t waste a single word on him.
His blade flashed twice in the span of a heartbeat.
A scream tore through the air.
Blood sprayed from both severed thighs in thick arcs, and the sound of his agony was almost too much to
listen to.
Every trace of color drained from his face.
His whole body shook with pain, and cold sweat beaded across his forehead.
“My legs! My legs!”
Alan’s expression stayed completely flat.
He planted a boot down on the man’s chest and turned to look toward Steven and the others.
Bianca’s eyes had already filled with tears from sheer fright, while Edric, Peter, and Fiona held the perimeter around them.
Darlene worked fast, channeling her healing power into Steven’s wounds.
Steven coughed up a mouthful of blood and managed a small, crooked smile.
“Don’t worry about me, everyone. I’m fine. This won’t kill me. I figured there was still one more card left to play.”
Bianca’s eyes had gone red around the edges. “Steven…”
Steven smiled and took her hand. “Bianca, it’s okay. I promise I’m fine.”
Peter spat out a curse. “I can’t believe that traitor was actually one of the military’s own.”
“He was probably bought off,” Steven said. “It happens more often than people like to admit.”
Bianca helped Steven to his feet.
He glanced up at the night sky stretching above them.
He knew the Reads were watching this unfold from somewhere in the shadows.
Knowing he was still breathing had to be driving every last one of them into a rage right about now.
And that was exactly what was happening.
Every Divine General gathered in the Read household seethed with frustration, pacing the room in furious circles.
A chance that good, completely wasted.

Worthless!
A window like that won’t open again anytime soon.
That had genuinely been their best shot.
For a single moment, Steven had stood with his guard completely down. Even his S–rank battle armor wouldn’t have saved him. If that blade had landed clean. his head would have rolled.
His reflexes had simply been too fast. He’d somehow wrenched the Dragon Spear around in time to catch
the strike.
Connor let out a furious roar. “Forget waiting around! I’ll finish this myself! That kid dies tonight, no excuses!”
Eric glanced back at his uncle, who returned a calm, unshaken nod.
Only then did Eric’s nerves settle.
“Yes. Go.”
Connor bellowed with conviction. “Wait for my good news. Tonight, they’re all going to pay for this!”
At the same time, Abigail raged inside her own chambers.
“He’s still breathing? Useless. Every single one of them is useless!
“I want him dead, and I mean it!

“Steven, are you alright?”
Steven instinctively stepped back, and the others closed in defensively around him.
The general’s expression stiffened, and he raised both hands, taking a careful step back.
“Easy now. The commander sent me here himself. He wanted me to pass along his apology. None of us saw something like this coming.”
Steven met his eyes and spoke evenly. “No offense, sir, but I can’t tell friend from enemy right now, so keeping my distance is the smart move. Please tell the commander I still trust him. Rot like this finds its way in no matter how careful anyone is.”
Relief washed visibly over the general’s face.
“Understood completely. I’ll pass that along. You should all head back and get some rest.
“Should I take this one in for questioning?”
Steven gave a nod. “Take him. As long as Mr. Browning’s the one watching over things, nothing’s going to go wrong.”
Down on the ground, every last shred of hope drained out of Nathan. Falling into military custody for interrogation was the kind of fate that broke people completely.
“He’s all yours,” Alan said. “We’re heading out.”
Alan had no interest in lingering any longer. He led Steven and the rest of the group away from the plaza.
They escorted Steven straight back to the estate, and everyone gathered together the moment they arrived.
Olivia’s voice carried real weight. “We genuinely cannot let this keep happening. We need a real decision here. Either we pull back for now and return later to settle the score, or we don’t.”
Everyone nodded in agreement.

Peter spoke up next. “That was way too close. It’s a shame we don’t have the strength yet to go toe to toe with the Reads. Otherwise I’d say we march straight to their door and wipe them out completely. Once and for all
Quinn spoke up, which she rarely did. “What if we revealed the SSS–rank Divine Sigil? That might make the Reads think twice before trying anything else.”
Fiona cut back in. “That wouldn’t change a thing. To a family like that, Steven doesn’t come from real power and that’s all that matters to them. If they want him dead, they’ll keep trying no matter what gifts he’s hiding. If anything, now that blood’s been spilled between them, they’ll want him dead even more.”
