Chapter 247 The Conspiracy Begins

Finched

Deep beneath the ancient city, something vast and patient waited in the dark.

The old underground passages and tunnels wound through the earth like a labyrinth of forgotten bone, and crouching within them were beasts beyond counting.

Pairs of crimson eyes glowed in the darkness, row after row after row, cold enough to make the skin crawl just knowing they were there.

And deeper still, somewhere below even those passages, a group of people gathered around a cluster of glowing virtual screens.

Every face in that room wore a smile that had nothing warm in it.

“Both of the main players have arrived. The performance can begin.”

Lars’s expression carried the particular pleasure of a man watching a trap snap shut. He spoke into his earpiece with quiet relish. “Hugo, it’s your moment. The show between Alan and his old friend is about to begin.”

Twenty people moved through the ancient city, picking their way through corridors choked with wild green growth.

Every step was deliberate.

The unease pressing against Steven’s awareness had been building steadily since they crossed through the outer wall, and now it refused to be reasoned away.

Something was fundamentally wrong in this place. Deeply, undeniably wrong.

The invisible weight of it pressed against him from all sides, and every instinct he had was screaming.

There was nowhere to retreat to now.

Less than ten minutes after entering the city, Olivia and Cara both went rigid at the same moment.

Their voices came out almost in unison.

“Military update! Phantom Moon Fox has shown itself!”

A jolt of alertness snapped through the whole group.

“Pulling up the positioning feed now!” Olivia said.

Cara did the same without being asked.

A large red marker pulsed on the overlay in everyone’s vision, moving through the city’s interior at a speed

that defied easy tracking, cutting from one district to the next without pause.

Each time the red marke reached a new position, green markers bloomed in response, and it would change directions.

Other squads. Military units. Everyone was pouring into the containment pattern.

The encirclement was tightening, slow and deliberate.

Alan made his call without hesitation.

“Move!”

Twenty people broke into a hard, urgent run.

They joined the outer ring of the closing net and pushed inward.

Beasis streamed into their path from the surrounding ruins as they advanced.

Olivia spoke without slowing. “These are the beasts the Fox called in to run interference.”

Alan’s voice cut short and certain. “Kill them all!”

Whether now or later, every one of these creatures needed to go.

The squad moved like a blade driving through loose resistance, cutting through the beast clusters as they pushed deeper.

Olivia kept the updates flowing. Cara kept cutting in with her own.

“Hanford squads are opening full engagement on the Phantom Moon Fox!

“Rowenville squads converging from all directions!”

“Hanford has landed heavy damage on the Phantom Moon Fox!”

“One Hanford squad got torn apart by the Fox’s charge. Heavy casualties sustained!”

“Phantom Moon Fox is turning toward the Rowenville formations!”

“Two Rowenville squads have been wiped out! Requesting immediate reinforcement!”

Steven’s own was the pale, cool blue of B–rank.

Sebastian moved forward. “I’m fighting beside you!”

With a sharp command, Alan stopped him. “Stay back. Keep everyone safe. All I need to do is drive the

Fox back!”

Sebastian’s expression tightened with unmistakable concern.

That’s a level 5 beast. Even a Divine General wouldn’t face it alone!”

Alan’s face was absolutely eerily calm`

“Keep them safe.”

Olivia picked up the thread without missing a beat. “Converging squads are closing in from every direction. Military orders are to hold the Fox here and prevent it from breaking through.”

Finished

The squad members fanned out to deal with the beast pressure closing in from the surrounding ruins. Alan’s gaze fixed on the far end of the corridor ahead.

Energy gathered around him like a gathering storm, and the long blade in his grip hummed with latent force.

Alan’s entire presence shifted into something different, something older and more dangerous, and the loose debris on the ground around his feet began to tremble and scatter.

He looked toward the far end of the street. A white fox about one story tall came hurtling toward them at devastating speed.

Sebastian frowned. “That looks like a level 4.”

Olivia’s voice came back urgent and precise. “It’s a level 5! It’s contracting its size deliberately! It keeps shrinking. It’s trying to slip through the net!”

Alan said nothing more.

His body began to rise slowly and silently from the ground, lifting away from the earth as the force gathering around him reached a critical, hovering tension.
