"You said I couldn't interfere."
"That's splitting hairs."
"I'm just here to pick my wife up and take her home." Lucian reached his hand out to her.
Seraphina ignored his hand.
"You came all the way to the competition venue just to pick me up, and managed to leave Ms. Monroe utterly speechless while you were at it?"
Christian simply couldn't hold it in anymore. The corners of his mouth twitched, but before he could laugh, Seraphina tapped the driver's window.
"What's so funny, Christian?"
Christian sat ramrod straight.
"Just checking the rearview mirror for traffic, Ma'am."
Lucian gave him a flat look.
Christian immediately shut his mouth and raised the privacy partition.
With the divider up, the front and back of the car were completely sealed off, plunging the cabin into quiet intimacy.
Seraphina eyed the partition and raised an eyebrow. "You two really have this routine down, don't you?"
"He's highly competent at his job."
"This counts as his job?"
"Protecting his boss's marital harmony is definitely part of the job."
Seraphina let out a breath of exasperated laughter. She was about to climb into the car when Lucian grabbed her hand and pulled her straight into his lap.
"Lucian." She fell against his chest, instantly enveloped by his signature scent of cedarwood.
She bit her lip, shooting him a mock glare.
Lucian wrapped an arm around her waist, looking down at her.
"Today is my wife's very first comeback competition. How could I not be here?"
Her prepared scolding instantly dissolved. "But you didn't even know which team I was on. What was the point of watching?"
"I knew. I knew you were S."
"Since when?"
Lucian gently tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear.
"Since the day you registered."
"You investigated me?"
"I didn't have to. Every single person on the roster used their real name, except for one who used an alias."
Seraphina's hand, resting on his arm, went still. "So you guessed it from the start and just pretended not to know?"
"If you didn't want to tell me, I wasn't going to ask."
Seraphina looked at him. "Lucian, you're making me feel incredibly dense right now."
"You just haven't used the alias in so long that you forgot how much it stands out."
"That's just a polite way of calling me dense."
Lucian chuckled softly. "Even brilliant people have their blind spots."
