Three days later, the preliminaries had arrived.
When Seraphina came downstairs, Susan was waiting in the living room, holding Little Bean.
The baby's eyes were wide open, his tiny fists pumping energetically.
Susan laughed. "Ma'am, the young heir woke up early today. Once he heard you were heading out, he refused to go back to sleep."
Seraphina leaned down and brushed a finger against her son's cheek. "Is my sweet Little Bean seeing Mommy off?"
Little Bean babbled a few times.
"Go get 'em, Mommy! Melody is all flash and no substance."
Seraphina's fingers paused for a second before she stifled a laugh and squeezed his tiny hand. "With my sweet baby boy cheering me on, I have nothing to worry about."
She leaned in and planted a loud kiss on his chubby cheek.
Little Bean grinned widely, a string of drool nearly catching her sleeve.
"Mommy kissed me. Total victory."
A light cough suddenly sounded from behind her.
Seraphina looked up to see Lucian sitting in his wheelchair, completely failing to hide his jealousy.
She grabbed her purse. "Mr. Langford, what's with that look?"
Lucian tapped his own cheek. "Does Little Bean get one, but I don't?"
Susan immediately turned around with the baby. "Look out the window, young master."
Little Bean kicked his little legs.
"Daddy is so jealous, it's making the milk sour."
Seraphina's ears warmed. She leaned over and pressed a quick kiss to Lucian's cheek, but as she tried to pull away, he tapped the other side of his face.
"This side is feeling lonely, too."
"Lucian, don't push your luck."
"For the past three days, you've either been reading, researching, making calls, or tweaking your models."
He gripped the armrests of his wheelchair, his eyes fixed on her. "You completely neglected me, and I didn't interrupt you once."
Cornered by his logic, Seraphina gave him another quick peck before turning toward the entryway. "You are not allowed to follow me, you are not allowed to interfere, and you are absolutely not allowed to have Christian steal the competition prompts."
Lucian agreed easily. "Alright."
Seraphina looked back at him suspiciously. "You agreed entirely too fast. Now I'm really worried."
Christian poked his head in. "Don't worry, Ma'am. My only job today is taking Mr. Langford to physical therapy."
Lucian shot him a look. "You're awfully chatty today."
Christian shut his mouth instantly.
Seraphina slipped on her shoes and grabbed the door handle. "I'm going to win this on my own."
Lucian watched her. "I know."
Satisfied, Seraphina got into the car and left Lyra Bay for the competition venue.
