She continued, her eyes locked onto Seraphina. "Do you honestly think nepotism makes you superior, Seraphina?"
"The Green-Tech Research Institute values talent, not who you married."
Standing in the doorway, Melody's gaze swept over the spreadsheets in Seraphina's hand.
"You think cramming at the last minute with a textbook is going to get you anywhere?"
Seraphina capped her pen, remaining silent.
Seeing her lack of response, Melody's lips curved into a smug smirk.
"Being Mrs. Langford is glamorous enough, isn't it? Why come here to embarrass yourself? You'd be better off going home to play housewife for Lucian. At least you'd be doing what you're meant to do."
Caleb's expression darkened.
Marcus slammed his hand down on the papers, a flash of irritation in his eyes.
He didn't need an outsider dictating how his students should behave.
Seraphina looked up at her.
"Ms. Monroe, your education is supposed to broaden your mind, not give you an excuse to look down your nose at people."
The smile dropped from Melody's face.
"Who are you accusing of looking down on people?"
"Whoever felt the need to respond."
Seraphina met Melody's glare head-on. "I don't need your validation to prove my competence."
Melody stepped forward, her heels clicking sharply against the floor.
"You abandoned your projects for Sebastian back then, and now you're using Lucian's name to worm your way back in. You swap men, but you're still just riding on their coattails."
Caleb opened his mouth to intervene, but Marcus held up a hand to stop him.
Seraphina didn't back down.
"Quitting my projects was my mistake, and I own that. But I'm standing here today because Professor Monroe invited me, not because Lucian pulled strings."
Melody whirled around to face Marcus.
"Professor Monroe, has the Institute's standards really dropped this low? Someone who has been out of the field for years can just walk back in with an old textbook?"
Marcus looked up, the last traces of professional courtesy vanishing from his face. "Who told you she only has an old textbook?"
Melody hesitated, caught off guard.
