Seraphina nodded and took the application form. "I'll prepare thoroughly."
"That's more like it."
She flipped through the first couple of pages before a thought struck her. She looked up. "Professor, aren't summit applications usually submitted online? Why do I need to fill out a hard copy?"
He paused for a fraction of a second. "I prefer hard copies. Got a problem with that?"
She looked at him, the corners of her mouth twitching upward. "No, of course not."
He slammed his teacup down, as if terrified she would keep asking questions, and aggressively cut her off. "Stop asking questions and just fill it out."
Chuckling softly, she lowered her head and began writing her name.
He stood by and watched her for a moment before suddenly speaking up. "Seraphina."
She looked up. "Yes?"
"Remember this: you didn't come here today to beg me for a favor. I brought you here to give you the opportunity to shut everyone else up."
Her grip on the pen tightened. Softly, but with absolute conviction, she said, "I won't let you down."
"Save the pretty words."
He stared her down. "Bring me actual results, and then you can say that to me."
She nodded, a genuine smile gracing her lips. "I will."
Footsteps echoed from the hallway, followed by Caleb's voice. "Professor, the guest is here."
He didn't respond immediately. He just threw a cursory glance toward the door. "Put her in the reception room."
Caleb acknowledged the order, his footsteps fading away down the hall.
Seraphina finished filling out the final section. Just as she was about to put her pen down, the Professor reached out and snatched the application from the desk.
"Your handwriting is neat. Just like you—no unnecessary baggage."
Caught off guard by the compliment, she felt a little embarrassed. "Are you always this awkward when you give compliments, Professor?"
"Did I say it was a compliment?"
"That's what it sounded like to me."
His eyes flickered. He shoved the form into a file folder and glanced at her. "Let's go. We're heading downstairs."
She followed him out of the office. Just as they reached the stairwell, a familiar voice drifted up.
