Seraphina sat on the edge of the bed with Little Bean in her arms, her phone still pressed flat against her palm. The soothing scent of baby formula helped calm her racing nerves.
"Caleb texted. He said Professor Monroe wants to see me today."
Lucian's hand, which had been reaching for a glass of water, froze mid-air.
"The message from last night?"
She looked up at him. "You're still holding onto that?"
"Of course I remember a text that came in after ten o'clock."
"Lucian."
"I didn't read it."
He handed her the water, his eyes fixed on her face.
"Who is Professor Monroe?"
Tracing the rim of the glass with her thumb, she answered softly, "Professor Marcus Monroe. He's a leading researcher at The Green-Tech Research Institute. He used to be my mentor."
He studied her for a moment.
"Are you afraid to see him?"
She pursed her lips and offered a self-deprecating smile.
"Terrified."
"I used to be on his research team. When I dropped out to be with Sebastian Sullivan, he was furious. Later on, I ran into him at a banquet. I tried to say hello, and he completely ignored me."
That night, Sebastian had brought her as his plus-one, and the socialites had mocked her for having the audacity to try and curry favor with Marcus Monroe.
She hadn't defended herself.
Because she had truly believed that he had disowned her as his student.
Little Bean's feeding slowed, and he huffed in her mind.
"Don't be scared, Mommy! I'll just look incredibly cute. That grumpy old man won't stand a chance."
Glancing down at her son, she couldn't help but smile.
"Stop causing trouble."
Lucian paused as he reached over to tuck the baby's blanket in.
"I haven't said a word."
Her ears warmed, and she pulled the bottle back slightly.
"I was talking to Little Bean."
He kicked his legs enthusiastically.
"Daddy finally realizes I'm a prodigy."
Dropping the banter, Lucian steered the conversation back to the matter at hand.
"Do you want to go?"
Staring at Caleb's message, her finger hovered over the edge of the screen.
"I do."
"Then go."
