"I can't just float through life attending galas forever."

"I know."

Howard stared at her. "If your only goal is to prove yourself to someone else, you're going to burn out quickly."

Melody snapped her head up. "Dad, could you stop making every single conversation about Lucian?"

"Then who are you doing this for?"

She slammed the cap onto her highlighter. "Myself."

She snatched up her phone, swiping to a list of required reading. "There's an out-of-print research manuscript on this list. I'm going to ask someone to track it down for me."

Howard's tone softened. "Have my secretary handle it."

"No, I'll do it myself."

She drafted a text to Landon: "Can you help me find a specific research book?"

Landon replied almost instantly: "Didn't realize you were such a scholar."

Melody's fingers hovered over the keyboard before typing, "I'm not joking. I actually need it."

"Send me the title."

After she forwarded a screenshot, Landon shot back another text: "Beg me."

Melody furrowed her brows and fired off a warning: "Landon!"

"Fine. I'll get it to you ASAP."
