The kiss lasted for what felt like an eternity, only breaking when the sound of approaching footsteps echoed nearby.
Seraphina pressed against his broad shoulders, shoving him away.
Her lips were flushed a deep, swollen crimson. Her hands were still locked on the armrests to avoid touching his fresh wounds.
Lucian looked down at her through half-lidded eyes. "Why did we stop?"
She glared at him. "Lucian, we're in a public hospital."
"I'm aware."
"Then why did you do that?"
"I've been holding back for way too long."
The heat crept back up her ears. "You think you're justified?"
He took her hand. "I'm completely out of line. That's why I'm letting you scold me."
"Does scolding you even work?"
"Absolutely. While you're yelling at me, I get an excuse to stare at you longer."
Seraphina looked away, the anger she'd mustered already dissolving.
She reached down to smooth out his blanket. "Let's go back inside. It's getting chilly."
Lucian didn't let go of her hand. "You weren't actually mad just now."
"You're imagining things."
"Your ears are bright red."
"It's the wind."
"And your lips?"
Seraphina wheeled him around a loose paving stone. "Shut up."
"Alright."
He stayed quiet for a whole three seconds before adding, "We can finish this in the room."
She gritted her teeth. "Lucian."
He chuckled softly. "That was the last thing, I swear."
"You always say that."
"I mean it this time."
She muttered under her breath, "Your face is going to be the death of me."
He tilted his head. "Was that a compliment?"
"Don't push your luck."
"I'll take it as a compliment."
Back in the ward, a nurse greeted them with a smile. "Time for your blood pressure reading, Mr. Langford."
