Chapter 593
Cole’s chest heaved, his eyes turned frantic, like a rat looking for a hole in the wall.
“I know how Chicago works. You don’t survive in this city by picking a fight with the Capones,” he slowly shook his head, “I’m not suicidal.”
My stomach twisted.
No.
He was lying.
I made a desperate sound behind the gag.
Raphael’s eyes flicked toward me for the briefest second before returning to Cole.
I thrashed against the ropes on my wrists. I wanted to scream. I wanted to tell Raphael that Cole was rewriting the entire night, that he was a monster, that he was twisting everything because he knew how dangerous the Capones
were.
No.
No!
Mama D looked up so quickly she almost lost her balance.
“Cole-”
He spoke over her, “She walked through my front door with her girls asking for protection.”
My heartbeat became deafening.
“No…”
The word disappeared behind the gag.
Cole continued, “The second she brought Gianna into this room unconscious, I panicked. I knew what your family would do to this city if she went missing. So I played along with Denise just long enough to get her to stay still, and then I called you immediately! I gave you the address! I saved her from them!”
My breathing turned frantic.
No.
Please.
Stop.
“She thought I had enough people to hold the girl until payment arrived,” he gave another short shake of his head, “I told her she was insane.”
He laughed once.
It was a nervous laugh.
Every lie came out calmly, patiently as if he had practiced them a hundred times.
Mama D shook her head over and over.
Fresh tears rolled down my face. I looked desperately toward Raphael.
Please…
Please don’t believe him.
I couldn’t speak. I couldn’t pull the gag from my mouth. All I could do was shake my head as hard as I could.
Because I knew Mama D, she wasn’t perfect, she’d made mistakes, she’d lied, she’d hidden things but she would never…
Never…
Hand me over for money.
Cole had forced this.
Mama D finally spoke, but her voice came out small and broken, she was scared, “He was in on it! He helped plan it! He wanted every single dollar just as bad as—”
“I have proof!” Cole cut her off, “Don Capone, look at the computer on my desk! Look at the drive! I have security cameras covering the back alley and the entrance and at her place… where she took Gianna! I recorded every single second! I only played along to get you here just to keep Gianna alive.”
Mama D froze. Her jaw dropped open, her eyes going completely wide. Her lips trembled, but no sound came out. She didn’t try to defend herself. She didn’t say she didn’t do it. She just stared at Cole in total, crushing shock.
