Chapter 592
“Move!”
Capone guards surged forward with frightening speed.
Cole’s men reached for their weapons but they never got the chance.
One guard twisted a man’s arm behind his back before he had even cleared his waistband. Another kicked a pistol across the concrete floor. Boots thundered in every direction as commands echoed through the room.
“Hands!”
“Down!”
“Don’t move!”
Within seconds, every weapon in the basement had been stripped away.
Cole took one step backward and that was all Raphael allowed him.
Raphael crossed the distance so quickly I barely saw him move, one moment he was standing beside the stairs. The next, his hand had closed around the front of Cole’s jacket.
The impact against the brick wall echoed through the basement. Dust drifted from the ceiling.
Cole let out a choked, wet wheeze, his eyes widening in pure horror as his legs dangled in the air.
Raphael didn’t say a word but he didn’t look like himself anymore. And the next moment, he shoved the barrel of his black Glock straight between Cole’s teeth.
He pushed it in deep, forcing the iron against the back of Cole’s throat until Cole’s jaw stretched open to its breaking point. Cole’s hands flew up, grabbing frantically at Raphael’s thick wrist, but Raphael’s arm didn’t even shake.
“One,” Raphael whispered, “Give me just one reason why I shouldn’t blow your fucking brains all over this wall right now.”
Raphael held him there without a word, his eyes locked onto Cole’s as though he were committing every detail of his face to memory.
Around them, the guards continued moving.
All the girls were forced onto their knees, while Mama D stood trembling, tears streaming down her face. A guard guided her aside as another searched the room for anything that could be used as a weapon.
“Don Capone-” Cole choked out, the words thick because of the iron pressed against his tongue. He didn’t look at Raphael anymore, he pushed his eyes sideways, desperate to find Vincenzo standing in the center of the room, Listen to me! I called you! I gave you the location myself!”
“Shut the fuck up,” Raphael hissed, his thumb clicking the hammer of the Glock back. The sound was tiny, but in the basement, it sounded like a bomb going off.
“No, please! Look at the facts!” Cole screamed around the gun, tears of fear finally leaking out of his eyes and running into his ears. “I have no bad intentions for the girl! If I wanted to hurt Gianna, if I wanted to hide her, I never would have called you here! I wouldn’t have brought you straight to my door!”
He swallowed hard.
“If I wanted your sister dead…” his eyes flickered toward me before returning to Raphael and Vincenzo, “…why would I tell you exactly where she was?”
What? What was he doing? What was he playing at?
“It was her,” Cole gasped, “It was Denise! It was all her from the very start!”
My head started to spin. No. No, no, no.
“She brought the girl to me!” Cole yelled louder, “She showed up at my place with Gianna already knocked out cold! She handed her over to me like a piece of meat! She told me the Capones were soft for her. She said you guys had millions, that you would empty your vaults if we held her for ransom! She wanted the money, Don Capone! She wanted to blackmail you!”
