Ethan's brow furrowed slightly.
Although he called Serena his sister, they weren't actually close.
Serena was selfish and vain; she never checked up on him like this.
This was literally the first time she had ever shown concern for his well-being.
He couldn't shake the feeling that she was just putting on a performance for Clara.
Ethan mumbled, "I'm hungry. I'm going to eat."
He slipped past her and headed downstairs.
A mocking grin appeared on Clara's face. "If you enjoy playing the older sister so much, why don't you have your mother birth you another brother?"
Serena's face turned livid.
Everyone in the Lambert family knew Vera couldn't have any more children.
Clara was deliberately trying to humiliate her.
"Ethan is my family. Keep your nose out of my business."
Clara gave her one last icy glare before making her way down the stairs.
Dinner was already served in the sprawling dining room.
Vera was seated elegantly at the head of the table.
"Clara," she began dismissively. "Your father is busy with work and had a last-minute business trip. He won't be back until tomorrow morning."
She paused, then added, "Christian and the second eldest are at boarding school, and the youngest is receiving treatment at a special facility. It's just the few of us for now."
Clara nodded briefly. "Understood."
She had plenty of time to mend the bridges with her other brothers.
As for her so-called father... He was a blind fool who hadn't deserved the five beautiful children her mother had given him.
Across the table, Ethan kept his eyes on his plate. "I'm pretty sure you failed your entrance exams and the family had to buy your way in, too."
Reaching the top of the stairs, Clara nearly laughed out loud.
Ethan was actually pretty cute when he wanted to be.
"That is completely different!" Serena slammed her fork down. "I misbubbled my scantron by mistake! And what is wrong with you, Ethan? Why are you taking her side?"
Ethan pushed his plate away. "I'm just stating facts."
"Ethan, never forget that she is the reason your mother is dead!" Serena hissed through gritted teeth. "She bullied me the second she got back, and she's already bullying you. You need to watch your back. Don't fall for her tricks."
"And tell Christian and the second eldest to stay at boarding school. I don't want her using them."
"And the youngest absolutely cannot come home. Seeing her will just make his condition worse..."
Lingering at the top of the stairs, Clara heard every poisonous word perfectly.
