Clara's expression was freezing.
With Serena constantly whispering poison in his ear, she and her brothers would never have a chance to bond.
She either had to pack up her brothers and move out into their own apartment.
Or, she had to brutally evict Vera and Serena from the Lambert estate.
Pushing those thoughts aside for now, she snapped, "Ethan Lambert, get over here!"
Serena spread her arms like a mother hen. "Clara, it's incredibly late. Just let him go to bed!"
"I'm only going to say this one last time. Get over here."
Clara's voice had dropped to a deceptive calm—the ultimate warning sign of her suppressed fury.
Ethan tightened his jaw.
He stepped out from behind Serena, dragging his feet with extreme reluctance. "What do you want?"
Clara seized him by the arm and hauled him down the hall into her own bedroom.
"Hey! Clara, what are you doing?!" Serena rushed after them, only to have the door slammed directly in her face.
She stomped her foot in pure rage.
But there was nothing she could do.
Clara dragged Ethan to her wardrobe and commanded, "Open it."
Ethan scowled in annoyance.
He shoved the doors open, only to find the massive space practically empty. There were exactly three outfits hanging inside, and one of them was her school uniform.
"I've worn these two outfits for the past four years," Clara said quietly, sitting down on the edge of her bed. "And these shoes? I bought them a year ago for fifty bucks, and it completely drained my savings. I didn't even have enough money to buy decent clothes. What made you think I had the money to buy a train ticket back to Springfield?"
She was terrified of repeating the agonizing mistakes of her past life.
She was terrified of falling blindly into Vera and Serena's lethal traps.
She was terrified she would be murdered by Vera before she ever got the chance to save her brothers...
That was why she was so relentless.
That was why she was resorting to extreme measures.
"I'm sorry!" Ethan lowered his head, tears spilling over his lashes. "I shouldn't have blamed you without knowing the truth."
Clara smiled softly. "Learning how to apologize is the first step to growing up. You're making fast progress, Ethan."
She reached out and gently ruffled his hair.
