To Serena's shock, Clara remained utterly indifferent. Not a single muscle in her face twitched.

[An elite socialite must master at least one instrument. Please flawlessly perform any piano piece.]
Clara's grip on her fork suddenly faltered.
Piano... She hadn't touched a piano in six years...
When her mother was still alive, Pearl had forced her to practice every single day. Back then, sitting on that piano bench was the absolute bane of her existence.
It was probably the only thing her mother had ever been genuinely strict about.
But Clara had been a wildly rebellious kid. The second her mother turned her back, Clara would sneak out and run wild in the streets until dusk...
Remembering those golden childhood days, a lump formed in Clara's throat, and her eyes grew damp.
She asked softly, "Dad, I remember having my own piano. Is it still in the house?"
"Clara, your old piano broke ages ago," Serena chimed in with fake sweetness. "When the secondhand dealers came by, Mom just sold it to them. You aren't mad, are you?"
Clara let out a bitter, silent laugh.
They had thrown a living, breathing daughter into a rural foster home. What was an old piano to them?
"Clara, if you're really interested in learning, I can buy you a new one and hire an instructor. However..." Vera paused tactically. "You haven't touched a keyboard in years. Picking it back up now would be extremely difficult. Given that you're in your crucial senior year, I really think you should be focusing all your energy on your academics..."
"Clara, if you really want to play, I can—" Jonathan started.
"It's fine. I was just asking," Clara interrupted smoothly, setting her fork down. "I'm heading to school."
She stood up and walked out of the mansion.
Getting pointers from a genius of that caliber would work miracles for a struggling student.
It seemed he really didn't have to worry about Clara failing out of college anymore.
Clara marched back to her classroom carrying a massive stack of freshman foundational worksheets.
Mr. Yates' mandate was clear: she had to finish at least three packets a day.
