Her marriage to Evan had made her a laughingstock.
So had this mess with Felix.
She did not want her life to become another joke.
So no matter why Evan had died this time, she would not let anyone see her grieve.
After everything she had been through, Stella had only one thought left.
She needed to love herself.
That was enough.
No one else needed to matter too much.
Because caring deeply for someone, only to discover they were never worth it, could drive a person insane.
She had nearly lost herself in Eirden.
Other people had already hurt her enough.
She would not help them hurt her too.
“You think I’m heartless, don’t you?” Stella asked with a bitter smile when Remi said nothing.
Remi shook her head.
“No. Evan hurt you too deeply. You’re afraid that grieving for him would make you look foolish all over again.”
Despite her age, Remi was surprisingly good at reading people.
She understood why Stella refused to show any sadness.
It was not that Stella felt nothing.
She simply could not bear to let her life become another cruel joke.
“Give me Amos’s number,” Stella said.
She did not want to discuss Evan anymore.
He was dead.
Now she only wanted him to become part of her past as quickly and completely as possible.
Letting go was the best way to leave him behind.
“You want to call Amos?” Remi asked. “He probably doesn’t have time to deal with you right now.”
“Whatever you need, you can tell me. I can probably take care of it.”
But Stella clearly had no intention of explaining.
She only gave Remi a quiet look.
“Just don’t start thinking about going back to Eirden,” Remi warned. “If you return this time, no one will be able to save you.”
Stella had already escaped Eirden twice.
