Chapter 910
But the moment her head touched the pillow, she fell into a deep sleep.
She had no idea how long she had been out when she suddenly felt herself pulled into someone’s arms.
No matter how exhausted she was, the sensation jolted her awake instantly.
The moment she saw Evan, fury surged through her.
“You bastard!”
She raised her hand to slap him, but Evan caught her slender wrist.
“I need some sleep too.”
“Then go sleep somewhere else!”
She hated being woken up, especially like this.
Evan had never behaved this way before.
In the past, if he came home at night and found her asleep, he would always make sure not to disturb her.
This was no longer merely shameless.
He was becoming downright unbearable.
“I want to hold you.”
“You…”
“Stop fighting me and go back to sleep. It’s been too long since I held you.”
Far too long.
Had Amos not suggested this approach, Evan genuinely would not have known how he could ever hold her again.
Now that she was finally in his arms, he felt an unexpected sense of contentment.
Even if there was no longer any affection in her eyes, having her this close was enough.
“Let go of me.”
Stella recoiled from his touch.
“If I don’t make it back tonight, Amos will arrange for someone to take you somewhere no one knows you.”
Stella went still.
The hostility radiating from her vanished in an instant.
She looked up at Evan.
“What do you mean?”
If he did not make it back safely…
“You might die out there?”
She said it without the slightest concern, even with a trace of mocking anticipation.
Evan fell silent.
About an hour later, Evan finally released her.
He got out of bed and picked up the clothes he had removed earlier.
“I’m surprised.”
Her sudden words made his hands pause.
Evan turned and looked at her back as she lay facing away from him.
“I thought you’d take me with you.”
Evan had said there was a chance he might not return tonight.
That could only mean he and Felix were about to clash.
Under those circumstances, it was surprising that Evan had not planned to bring her along.
“I told you. I’m not using you.”
Stella said nothing.
“The ones trying to use you this time are Felix and Aaron.”
The words hurt.
Of course they did.
But with danger closing in that night, Evan needed Stella to start trusting her own instincts.
