Stella gave a faint smile and looked at Evan.
“How is she supposed to come back?”
Even though Evan had already made his meaning perfectly clear, Stella continued forcing him to say it more plainly.
Yes, Yara needed to come back.
But how?
“You don’t have to…”
The rest of Evan’s sentence died beneath a single look from Stella.
The way she stared at him made the pressure in his chest even more suffocating.
With a loud clatter, he threw his chopsticks onto the table, rose to his feet, and strode away.
In the end, he could not bring himself to say, “You should go in exchange for her.”
He could not say it.
He had no right to.
But his meaning had already been unmistakably clear.
Stella was left alone in the dining room.
She continued eating quietly.
None of the dishes on the table were foods she actually liked, but she truly seemed hungry.
What had just happened with Evan did not appear to affect her appetite at all.
When Ivy entered, she found Stella still eating.
It was surprising that she could eat at a time like this.
Ivy walked over and sat beside her.
“I won the bet,” Stella said.
Won.
The word sounded painfully ironic.
What had she won?
She had lost completely.
With Evan, she had always been the one who lost.
She had never expected him to choose her in the end.
Ivy fell silent.
Those words told her exactly what Evan had said to Stella.
The expression on his face when he went to find Amos had already revealed everything.
Ivy looked at Stella.
“What am I supposed to say to comfort you?”
“You don’t have to say anything. I don’t need comforting.”
No one had ever comforted Stella before.
She had survived all those years by dragging herself through them one day at a time.
