Stella watched Evan’s expression turn grim but said nothing.
Even without seeing the message, she could guess it concerned Yara.
Now all she had to do was wait for his verdict.
Yes, a verdict.
Whether her fate was in Felix and Aaron’s hands or Evan’s, she always seemed to be waiting for someone else to decide what would happen to her.
None of them ever intended to give her a choice.
Evan looked at Stella.
She pushed the piece of chicken to one side and quietly continued eating the crispy pork.
“Stella.”
She ignored him and kept eating.
“I need to know what happened to Yara while she was with your brother.”
There was no question that Evan was panicking now.
“I can’t help you with that,” Stella replied. “I have no influence in the Hogarth family.”
When she had first returned to Eirden, everyone had celebrated the return of the Hogarth family’s precious princess.
Looking back now, that title seemed almost painfully ironic.
She was only telling the truth.
But the coldness in her voice struck a nerve in Evan.
“Yara was always good to you, wasn’t she?”
As far as Evan knew, Yara was probably the only member of the Wright family Stella had ever gotten along with.
“So?” Stella asked. “Am I supposed to repay her somehow? Don’t forget what your family…”
“Enough.”
Evan cut her off before she could finish.
He knew she was about to bring up everything the Wright family had done to her.
And it was true.
When it came to Stella, the Wright family had caused far more harm than good.
“Can’t you judge Yara separately from the rest of them?” he asked, his voice strained.
Stella looked at him without speaking.
The coldness in her eyes was answer enough.
“There’s more to your mother’s death than you know,” Evan said.
