Nora extended her pinky finger. "I'll be right here while you get your IV, and I'll be right here when you wake up."
Bonnie stared at her for a long time, as if weighing the promise. Her dark eyes darted around before she slowly slid her tiny pinky out from the blankets and hooked it around Nora's.
Nora sealed the promise by pressing their thumbs together, which finally gave Bonnie the reassurance she desperately needed.
"Okay then," Bonnie mumbled, wiggling out of the blankets. "I'll get the IV."
But she quickly added, her last shred of stubbornness clinging on, "But I don't want to go to the hospital."
Nora thought it over. She tucked Bonnie back into bed and stepped out into the hallway to call Xander.
He answered on the second ring. The background noise on his end was dead silent.
"Bonnie really doesn't want to go to the hospital. Could you send a family doctor over instead?" Nora quickly explained the situation.
"Understood. I'll handle it."
He hung up without another word, but Nora knew he would get it done.
When she walked back into the room, Bonnie was sitting up against the headboard. Her flushed little face immediately turned toward the door, her brow furrowing with worry. "Nora, can we still go to the amusement park tomorrow?"
Nora sat back down beside her, brushing the damp hair from the girl's forehead. "We can go as soon as you're all better. But if you don't get the IV, you won't get better quickly, and we might have to cancel."
Bonnie's mouth instantly formed a determined pout. "I'll get the IV! I'll be a good girl!"
Nora couldn't help but chuckle, gently petting her messy hair.
When she returned, Bonnie was leaning against the headboard, her left hand resting flat on the blanket, completely immobilized by fear. She stared at her own hand as if a sudden movement might cause it to detach.
Leaning against the doorframe, Nora couldn't hold back a soft laugh.
Bonnie instantly shot her a betrayed pout, a single tear still clinging to her eyelashes. "You're laughing at me!"
With her flushed cheeks puffed out and that glistening teardrop, she looked impossibly adorable.
Nora walked over, sat down, and gently wiped the tear away. "Are you hungry? Is there anything you want to eat?"
Bonnie sniffled. "Can I eat your cooking? Your food was so good last time."
