The sheer gravity in Xander's voice was lethal, his eyes flashing with a predatory danger. Seraphina swallowed hard, the remaining color draining from her haggard face. She opened her mouth to retort, but the heavy thud of security guards rushing toward them echoed down the alley.
Gritting her teeth in sheer frustration, Seraphina hissed, "Enjoy your little honeymoon phase while you can, Nora. Before it's too late."
With that final threat, she spun around and bolted in the opposite direction.
Xander immediately turned to Nora, gripping her shoulders as his eyes frantically scanned her from head to toe. When he spotted the angry red mark on her forehead, his brow furrowed in deep distress. "Are you hurt? Did she put her hands on you?"
Nora shook her head slowly. "Seraphina laid all her cards on the table. Frederick is alive. I have no idea who he's targeting or why he's chosen to stay hidden all these years."
Xander had already pieced the puzzle together. His voice was resolute. "Frederick is the eldest son of the Fletcher family. He handled all their overseas operations until he supposedly died in that plane crash five years ago. If he survived, then the crash itself might be the real reason he's back. The Fletcher empire is about to be violently restructured."
He paused, taking Nora's icy, trembling hands and enfolding them gently in his warm grip.
"Whatever game they're playing, I need you to remember one thing. Do not go anywhere alone. I'll drop you off at work and pick you up every single day. I've already tightened security around Cassie and Bonnie, and I have men watching over your father's estate. I swear to you, an ambush like this will never happen again."
Nora looked down at their intertwined hands, a heavy silence hanging between them before a rare vulnerability cracked her composure. "Xander, Seraphina claimed I've been living with the person who murdered my mother and brother. Do you think Frederick actually knows the truth?"
